Hi all,

Looking for some advice about next step in terms of advanced driving.

I've done a one day Ride Drive course which was excellent, learnt a huge amount - so where to go now?

I had some discussions with a member on here about HPC, which sounds ideal longer term, but quite expensive to train / qualify in the short term. Definitely something I want to do though, when I have the funds.

Are there any other organisations / clubs out there which would allow me to practice, rather than take further instruction (I feel I need to consolidate the Ride Drive day before going on further lessons). I'm looking for a more driving focused organisation than anything marque specific.

Interestingly, my instructor advised against IAM.

Any suggestions very welcome.

Cheers.

If you believe your instructor, HPC.

If you're just looking to practice what you've learnt, you'd probably be better finding a local ADer and going out for a few drives with them (AD-UK might be a good place to start). However, IAM/RoSPA will cover and build on the same material as RideDrive have done for you as it all comes from the same bible so whichever route you follow you will be able to build on your skills.

Did your instructor give reasons why he didn't recommend IAM?

It would be useful to know why the instructor was against the IAM route, as this could affect any advice you'll get here.

If you just want to practice, do you need an organisation to help? Having someone else in the car will lead to discussion and probably instruction.

It sounds a bit like you might have had an intense day and been shown how much there is to learn, but not been given the tools to go away and work on it yourself. An IAM or RoSPA course will spread the learning over a longer period and make it more likely to stick, with the proviso that the instruction is delivered by volunteers and can vary from excellent to adequate.

Have a look at the AD-UK forums. Once you're known there, you can access a pool of very experienced people who are prepared to meet up for drives.
