Just a quick post aimed at anyone with no "advanced" experience wondering whether its worth doing an advanced course.

Do it.

I don't want to start a debate on the merits of various organisations or techniques (all covered in other threads), I just want to convey how much I, an ordinary bloke, got out of it.

I'm now much more confident, enjoy my car a lot more (a TVR Chim) and am a much safer driver (by virtue of much better observation / anticipation).

PM me if you want to know a bit more about who I went out with, stuff we did and what I learnt.

Some call this "positive feedback".
Most say, "What?".
Then, most never venture here.
OP, thankyou for another reinforcement of our here, minority view.

Rossco2010: Great post. Anyone in this forum who hasn't yet done any form of advanced driving, should take a fresh look at what is essentially a completely free product!

As Rossco says: Do it!

Interesting point there "essentially a free product".

Due to work commitments I did this as a one day intensive course i.e. the expensive way, but should cover all but about £60 through reduced insurance (if I keep it clean until March!)

+1

Edit: Actually it was a free course for me as the £125 "skill for life" course is refunded by my local council (Bristol) to improve driving standards in the area!

Buggeration, wish I'd known that when I lived in Bris!

You have to be between 17-25 if that's any consolation.

If you are referring to the IAM 'Skill For Life' the cost is £139 although some local groups (e.g., Gloucestershire) offer a discount for younger drivers. Or is this another example of a council copying the IAM course name for their own course?

It is actually £139 (I think the £125 comes from the current discounted-for-Christmas pricing). The Bristol group are lucky enough to have been given an amount of money from both Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils, meaning that we can refund the course cost to anyone under 25 and living, working or studying in the area.

The Bristol group are also currently involved with a separate project aimed at improving the skills of young men with chequered driving histories, which should lead on to many of them doing the Skill For Life course.

The IAM has occasionally attracted criticism because of the age profile of it's membership, but out here in the groups we're making efforts to improve things.

I had forgotten the curent offer, until 24th Dec., of a 10% discount if 'Skill For Life' is bought as a gift.
