As it says, I've just signed up and made contact. How long does it usually take to get the first drive? How long/short a time is recommended for the whole thing? Any hints?

IAM "A Skill for Life", membership, observations & test. Basingstoke group was the closest.

Time to first drive depends on the group. My group currently has 26 associates preparing for the test and 3 observers without an associate. So anyone joining our group now, and living within a reasonable distance of one of the free observers, would have their first drive on a date to suit both the associate and the observer - tomorrow, next week, next month?

Time to take and pass the IAM test? In our group the shortest has been one drive and the longest was over 20 drives.

indeed it depends where you are

our RoADA group could take a couple of new associates for immediate start, one of our neighbouring groups is full up just now - but without a wait list

In my group (Bristol) the 'skill for life' is valid for 6 months and I had as many drives as possible during that time. Not through lack of skill (IMHO!) just because I enjoyed going out for drives with my observer, who was equally happy.

I took my mock test last week "excellent drive" and I've requested a test date from IAM.

On the other hand, my Dad's group in Blackpool had a very regimented 6 drives then do the test.

It all depends on the group

I joined the Basingstoke group, I randomly turned up on one of the sunday meets and got an "assessment" drive. I was then paired up with an observer straight away and went out for the first drive. I did 3 more with him, then a "check" drive with a different observer. Then applied for test - had to wait a month for that, and now I'm done. Need something else to do now.

You might find the Ad-UK board useful as it's a little more focussed on the formal test and can help you through that.

It took two months to get the first drive arranged but I had five and, today, I had a decent 'cross-check' so the test is next.
What's this Ad-UK board?

"Sorry - the recipient doesn't permit emails."

I've been told I might have to wait a few weeks for the test and my assessor has said he'd be happy to do a couple more drives while I'm waiting, if I want.

Whether or not it was a 'great drive', you have reached a milestone and may now wear your badge with pride. This milestone can form an important stepping stone to 'greater' things if you wish; and I hope that now you have been successful, you will strive to become an enthusiastic member and make yourself available to others. Learning should never stop.

Wear your badge with pride and try to be an example to all other road users.

Congratulations!
