Do any companies realy give any merrit to young drivers having passed an advanced driving test.
I wish to put my 1969 IIa Landy back on the road for my self and my 18 year old son to drive, it will only do about 2000 miles a year at best. Because it is an aditional vehichle for both of us and has no no-claims the quotes are quite bonkers.

The IAM Select insurance offer has recently been extended to those over 19 (the minimum age limit used to be higher). How long would you have to wait?

Many members have reported that IAM Select are very competitive; I have not yet heard whether this applies to young members as much as to older ones. Generally, if you find a cheaper quote they match or beat the quote while providing slightly better quality insurance.

I have found that Admiral are cheapest for my own children. Have you tried them? It used to be Churchill.

You might like to use the insurance issue as an angle to persuade your son to take advanced training - it would be bound to make him safer.

Insurers are all stick and no carrot, it is no suprise most people dont bother.

Im 19, and although is not 'advanced', i looked at pass plus when i was 17, never did it in the end, as it didnt bring quotes down in the slightest. Maybe from one or two but they were higher in the first place and made them no cheaper than my cheapest quote.

IIRC, back in 1998 when I was 17 I had a £100 reduction for both pass+ and IAM.

I doubt the insurance companies have 18 year old ROADAR members as part of their actuarial programmes.
Outliers, you see.
Mass of 18 year olds provide the data.

Hi,

I have spoken to Adrian FLux and they are checking but reckon that the new offer of up to 25% off for RoSPA Advanced Test Certificate holders will be extended ot all age of drivers from 17yrs old upwards.

I would be interested in hearing if this does get given. I was advised by a customer advisor at Adrian FLux that it was over 21yrs but managed ot speak to the person who negotiated the deal with RoSPA and he is certain it is from age 17yrs.

My Saab is insured with Adriean flux, I phoned them to ask if they would cover the Landy. They will only insure a car owned by an under 25 year old with them as main driver. 5 years ago when I purchased the car registering it in my then 13 year old sons name did not seem too good an idea.
NFU have covered it, 3000 miles a year (as its only done 63000 in 41 years I doubt it will be a problem)in my name with son as named driver, £260. they were not interested in ROSPA but did ask if he had done pass plus.

Congratulations to your son, Syd, and to you if you were part of getting his driving to that standard. Glad you have found a good insurance deal.

When I tried Adrian Flux for my son they would not cover a newish car comprehensively for a youngster - so offers of discounts were spurious. Hence, as mentioned, my children have had policies in their own names from Churchill (discount received for Pass Plus) and Admiral (no discounts, but cheapest). Has Adrian Flux changed? We have a family car insured for them to drive from NFU - for which your price makes me think I am paying too much!

I still want to know how competitive IAM Select have become for youngsters.

Has anyone got any experience of insurance discount from having an IAM for young drivers, because my premium, being a 19year old male, is extremely high.

Hi Tom,

At 19, you should now be old enough to qualify. I was slightly older than you when I did IAM, but it saved knocked about a quarter off my insurance (compared to all other insurance quotes, pretty much every year through my twenties).

You could always contact IAM Surety and ask - tel. 0845 603 1355 or email enquiries@iamsurety.com

I recommend contacting them, as they have always offered me a much better deal over the phone.

IAM Surety Scheme Acceptance Criteria. The main qualifiers are:

- IAM current paid up members who've passed the IAM test.
- The scheme is designed to reward IAM members because they are a better risk than the average driver, so multiple penalty points may exclude you from this scheme.
- For 19 to 79 year olds. (If you fall outside this age group, we do deal with a number of quality UK insurers and will endeavour to find you car insurance outside of this scheme).
- Associate Members (who haven’t passed the IAM test) will receive a straight 10% discount off RSA’s standard quote and policy.

Thanks for the reply, I shall definitely look into it then. I do unfortunately have three points on my driving license though.

I've never found any of these schemes to be competitive against other brokers.
