I passed my IAM test four years ago, and since then have had a variety of cars. From my 85bhp hatchback then, I now have an MX-5 and have felt of late I could do with some additional road tuition as my standards have slipped.

Now, I purchased the skill for life for one year back when I was 17, and I'm now 21. I haven't remained a member of the IAM since - do I need to buy the skill for life package again, or can I simply rejoin the IAM for 12 months, and then pay for a test? confused

Thanks in advance...

As far as I understand it you can rejoin nationally and locslly (best check with your local group) and then book another test.

You could always try RoSPA as an alternative too, I personally prefer their way on doing things, although that is a lot down to individual groups.

Your best bet is to contact IAM and ask them, but instead, why not consider RoSPA (RoADAR)? The test is identical (based on "Roadcraft"), many examiners conduct both IAM and RoADAR, and, for a test fee of about £60 (might be cheaper for your age group) and an annual membership fee of about £20 you are automatically re-tested every three years. Put the RoADAR annual fee on direct debit so that you can't forget and you won't then be faced with the rigmarole of asking the IAM to re-test you, charge you a re-test fee and a £30 annual fee for ever more, with no periodic re-test.

Might be worth considering.

I don't disagree about considering Rospa. However, to answer the direct question you certainly do not need to pay for the full Skill for Life package in order to retake an IAM test - but you won't find guidance on how to go about it too easily on the IAM website, and may have to ring or email with an enquiry.

For the cost of an IAM membership/retest you can probably get a RoADAR course/test?
Not sure I see the point of just taking an IAM test again without the benefit of preparation?

Me personally ..... I'd go down the RoSPA route smile

I've got the IAM t-shirt. Time to move on and up the AD ladder.
