Ok guys and girls. I read PH a lot but I never post, so this is a first for me and I need some help!

Today I was waiting at a set of traffic lights first in the queue, red for about 20 seconds and they go green. I turn at these lights every day for work might I add. The traffic coming towards are quite far back from the right turn and if they are slow off the lights like they were today I will turn in front of them. Which I did. I notice an old guy on my right, looks slightly unstable on his feet so keep my eyes on him to make sure he doesn't cross and I hit him. *BANG* on my left side, I’ve hit something..... Pull the car over, get out, cyclist. Sigh. I have hit/he has hit me, right into the side of my car on my left side, mirror and going further back from there. He’s ok, slight bump, bike is a bit mangled car has a minor scratch. Bus driver jumps out Fing and blinding at me, he wasn't even involved saying I should be locked up and I shouldn't have a license and I’m a danger to everyone.. harsh indeed(made a complaint to the police about him) Ambulance turns up, 3 police cars, so on and so forth. Guy is ok, I even give him a lift home.

I do not have a clue how there was a cyclist there and how he accelerated of the lights faster than the bus and cars. I couldn't quite work that out as he was on the road, not on the pavement. But still, I turned into his path so *my fault*

I am going to also settle this away from my insurance company and pay for his bike. Good idea?

But anyway, I have to either take 3 points and a £100 fine, or do the National Driver Improvement Scheme which I will obviously choose to do. Apparently it will cost me £200, I have been told lots of places do these for different prices and it doesn’t matter where I do it. I’m based in Nottingham, any advice on where is the cheapest would be great.

Cheers
Cam

Is this an alternative to a prosecution for careless driving?

I thought these were usually offered on a Force by Force basis, with a choice of which area you took it in. The course organiser needs to confirm that you have fully participated for you to be "let off". They will normally contact you with your options of where to go. There are probably only one or two local to you.

That is my understanding of the speed awareness courses, which I assume extends to this.

Not commenting on the original accident as OP hasn't asked...
