Essentially I have a friend who now has a car stuck on her drive. This is in the way and is causing some problems. It has two bald tyres, no tax (it is SORN) and no MOT. Otherwise the car is in safe condition to drive as far as I am aware. (Don't ask about the circumstances, just pick it up from here). She want's to shift/sell the car but isn't very clued up on these sort of things. She was hoping to sell it 'as is' until I pointed out that she had virtually no chance in it's current state of documentation and that it could not even be moved or test driven. I have offered to help.
My plan is this.

1) Book mobile tyre fitter to come and sort out the two bald tyres at house.

2) Book car in for MOT and get some sort of confirmation/proof from garage in case stopped.

3) Take out day insurance for me so I can drive car to and from MOT station.

I plan to book the car in to my local garage/MOT station as they are a trustworthy place so I know they will not try any rip-offs if work is needed.
This is about 12 miles across town from where the car is currently stored and probably isn't the closest MOT station to my friends house.
I live only a couple of miles away from the garage so the insurance certificate will have my name and details on. If stopped mid-route would this be a potential problem. I am guessing yes as I will be on the other side of town from my house and the garage/MOT centre so it might well look like I am not taking the shortest route to the garage.
The drive across town will probably pass some fixed ANPR cameras - are they likey to cause any problems ?

4) After MOT or required work and MOT return car directly to my house. This is only a few miles from the garage and has more space for storage on my drive.
Obviously if the car has to stay in I will need another day insurance cover to bring it back.

5) Give it a bit of a clean up and polish.

6) Sort out some cheap longer term insurance for the car.

7) Get tax disc which I think should automatically un-SORN the car.
At this point the car is road going and fully legal.

8) sell the car and cancel the insurance claiming partial refund.

She is happy to spend a bit of money on the insurance/MOT/tax as she now realises this should be recouped in a higher sale value.

Can anyone see any flaws or more importantly anything illegal in this.

I didn't bother going to SP&L as I find that forum a bit tedious.

There is a thread asking a very similar question on SPL at the moment.

The answer is, yes it is perfectly legal to drive a car without tax and, or MoT to a pre-arranged MoT testing station. The MoT testing station does not have to be the nearest one to you.

The wheels could be removed and taken to a fitting centre for replacement. They don't need to on the car for balancing.
