hi guys
what are the laws on undertaking now? i had a disscusion with someone yesterday and they think its perfectly ligal to undetake. i find this mad as its outright dangrous. i can see why people do it on massive multi lane motorways but thats them being lazy and people driving in wrong lanes that creates undertaking.
i get so mad with lazy and really bad driving manners and feel this is much more dangrous than speeding which is highly frowned on.

Try not to get mad with other road users, and try to avoid doing things yourself that will make others mad. Are you sure that doesn't happen at times?

Anyhow, as I see it the laws/rules/guidance about undertaking are not entirely clear. What does seem to be clear is that moving to a lane to your left for the specific purpose of undertaking is unacceptable, whereas if you happen to be travelling more quickly than somebody in a lane to your right, you can continue past with a fairly clear conscience; but I think it is wise to do it warily, and with a modest speed differential.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

i try not to get to mad with other drivers but some poor driving does boil my wee. like where you exist the m4 to go on the m25 london bound and you get people cutting in at over 100mph right at the last momment sometimes because the traffic isn't moving as they like but cutting inbetween cars. nothing is ever done against dangrous driving like this but if you get caught doing 3 miles and hour over in a 50 you get 3 points and a fine.

so its a bit vague then. i can see why people on massive multi lne motoeways do it but surely its not safe still and if someone cuts in to under take then its against the law.

1 Try harder.

2 Oh yes it is.

3 No way Jose. 57 is normally minimum for speeding ticket.

I hate slow moving, no good excuse for being there, not getting out the way, not overtaking anything, lane hogging tossers. I know people who will give them a minute to get with the programme. If they resolutely refuse to move, or they deliberatley sit there like a gimp, then people will undertake them. I say fair play thumbup

i actually agree with that but i guess its not a undertaking problem but people don't know how to drive and don't have any idea on lanes and how to use them.

:cough, cough:

Von will be along in a minute to explain how the ACPO guidelines work on this, coz I don't think they quite tally with what you've just said.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Do you think maybe my memory is that shot?

No, I expect your memory is fine, and I see the mention of 50.

It is just that I thought your reference to 57 being minimum for a speeding ticket was wrong. Von keeps telling us that the guidance is something along the lines of...."if you haven't already nicked somebody by the time they reach speed limit +10% +2 mph, you should do. You don't have to wait until they reach (for example) 57 in a 50. You can nick them earlier than that. Well that's my understanding.

Maybe the ACPO guidance has changed in the many years since you retired, Trevor. smile

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Whatever the law, if any, on undertaking, hopefully the police would be too busy dealing with the person who didn't move left after overtaking to be concerned with it.

Depends on the circumstances though, most undertaking I see involves impatience, aggressiveness & exceeding the limit also.

Works well in the States imho - much more freely flowing traffic on busy 3 lane roads without the competitive ego driven driving you see on most multi-carrageway roads in this Country.

That and the fact that every driver in the US has to assume that every other driver has a Glock in the glovebox. smile

Undertaking is generally caused by the idiots who sit in the outside lane when there is a perfectly clear inside lane.

It recently happened to me and drove me absolutely mad. Some old guy and his wife were sitting in the outside lane for about 10 miles or so a few cars ahead of me. One by one everyone got fed up of the guy.. It was in a 40mph limit roadworks and I know the old guy would use that as a defense of why he was sitting in that lane..but some common sense wouldn't have gone amiss.

But who's to blame if the driver being undertaken suddenly pulls left into the undertakee's vehicle?

and of course that the US has a road death rate 3 times our own (and that's before the Glock comes out of the glove box biggrin ). But of course the grass is always greener.......
