I've just finished reading "Mind Driving" by Stephen Haley (http://www.skilldriver.org) and found it to be a really excellent insight into the thinking skills it takes to be an expert driver. Always reassuring to see a few of your own conclusions mirrored in such a book, but it seems I've still got a lot of work to do...

I know it's been mentioned on here before, and while it might not be for everyone; in conjunction with Roadcraft, it's well worth a read.

(I've no connection with Mr Haley - just wanted to put in a good word and hear other peoples' thoughts on it.)

I've heard it mentioned (in a good way) a few times. Any chance of an example? [small] before I splash out {/small]

Found a very brief thing on his site at
http://www.skilldriver.org/EssentialThinkingSkills...

Section 4 shows the diagrams that act as a basis for the book. You won't get the full jist from the pdf, though - the things I like about the book are his systematic approach, the way he presents the information in such a straight-forward manner and how he's taken established business/science risk management skills and applied them so successfully to driving.

The main focus is on keeping the area around you at a reasonable safety level, but he tackles it in a realistic, practical way, and has a sensible (read non-government) attitude to matters like speeding.

I'd say it should be required reading for any driver that has realised there might still be more to learn (which I'd guess would be most of the people on this part of the forum smile )

It's a great book. Only part way through reading it. Liked the stuff on Speed, Space and Surprise.
