People have asked me what I want for Christmas , which lead me to start thinking about a performance driving day.

I've driven on tracks several times, in a number of different cars and had some tution but would like to learn a little more about the 'fun' stuff rather than racing lines - power oversteer and the like.

I was thinking that a Rally day would cater for this - http://www.rallyschool.co.uk/courses.asp or something similar, although having completed one some years ago I would be keen to learn new things on a track rather than mud.

I am based near Milton Keynes and wouldn't really want to travel the length of the country.

Are there any recommendations?

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but as an IAM member I'm obliged to suggest that their Xmas gift test package could make a much bigger difference to your driving than a single track day.

There are many good providers - one I always personally recommend is Don Palmer, who operates at Bruntingthorpe. The testimonials on Don's website say it all.

I have also heard many good reports, but not personally experienced, Andy Walsh.

Kind regards

Stefan's recommendations are the ones for serious skills development. For sheer fun, one of the best days out I ever had was at http://www.silverstonerally.co.uk/ - happens to be opposite the circuit, and thus quite local to you, but otherwise unconnected with it.

I've been there, and as you say, it was a splendid day out. Huge fun.

I can also recommend;

Racecar experience day with TopCats Racing; http://www.topcatsracing.com/drive_our_race_cars.h...
Proper racing cars on proper race tracks. None of this "slow down" lark reported by people who've done other "experience days" - a real racing driver getting you to "give it some...!"

And if you want some serious driver training, I recently did a day with Colin Hoad at Millbrook; http://www.catdrivertraining.co.uk/
Colin is without doubt the best driving instructor I've yet had, and I'd recommend him without reservation. And it was damn good fun, too. A friend recently did his drifting course and said that was a good day, too.

I did a day here http://www.billgwynne.com a few years back, very good fun in rwd escort for lots of arse out action or a scooby (group n i think). It's all done on gravel around cones, a really good day.

They're on outskirts of Brackley so local to you too.

Thank you for all of the comments and suggestions - I think the rally days look the best bet.

Having spent quite a bit of time on a track this sounds like much more fun.

Powerslides and hand brake turns here I come!!!

Thanks again
