Why couldn't they have done this 8 years ago when I first qualified and needed the discount on my insurance premium?

Better late than never smile

They did (well for the Police they did anyway).

If I remember right they used to say that you just had to sit the test after the D2 course as you would be ready without any tuition but IHCD instructors were always exempted the test,

I recently passed with a class 1 Advanced driving from the Scottish Police College and contacted my insurers admirial to see what I would save on my insurance prior to stumping up the £12. Answer - not a bean!

Yeah it's a bit of a joke, I passed my IHCD driving instructor course (emergency ambulance teaching) in 1994 and so far have saved err nothing in insurance premiums, seems they are not interested in people bettering their skills?

You need to contact IAM Surety for a quote, not just tell your existing insurer.
They only insure 21-79 I think.

In my experience IAM membership and IAM Surety insurance will save you as much as the square root of fk all on your premiums. Especially if one drives a performance car.

I am surprised a Class 1 Police Driving qualification doesn't push your premiums UP!

The way you have to look at it is that you have done IAM/ROSPA or have a Class 1 is that you are a whole lot less likely to claim on your insurance (through not having prangs) and therefore you are more likely to increase your no-claims discount. NCD is pretty much the only thing that insurance companies really pay attention to.

Oh...they like increasing age (at first) and feel they can charge more if you have had more than one NIP..but, trust me, threaten them with confused.com and it's amazing how quickly the points surcharge melts away.

I dont see why a class 1 should push my premiums up. Achieving a class 1 is a reflection of displaying observations, technique and safety well above that of an average driver. Also I get to drive fast enough at work when required that I drive my own car slow and safe whilst still using my observation skills (not to mention that I'm a tight Scotsman and I dont like spending more than needed on fuel).

I'm not sure why (perhaps its percieved attitude to risk taking), but I've always been under the impression that emergency services driver employment pushes up premiums, as does armed forces membership !

As for the IAM insurance scheme, the old one was useless for me, the new one is good, not brilliant, but good.

I'd suggest anyone with IAM membership talks to them, they are very customer orientated and keen to be competative.

They did manage to beat my other quotes, not by much but they did do it, and they also insure me for all my IAM duties.

My previous insurer gave me a discount for holding the senior obs, but when the pooh hit the fan and we were all asked to check we were covered for duties, they said they wouldn't cover me to maintain the qual they gave a discount for.
