My daughter took it using a Land Rover and horse trailer. From what I recall, it involved demonstrating the correct (safe) way to unhitch and hitch the trailer, a reversing exercise through an S shaped course between cones, an emergency stop and a general driving route that included urban and country roads. I can't remember if motorway was included: it could have done since the test centre was only a mile away from the M4.

You certainly need to practice reversing and to know the sequence for hitching/unhitching, e.g. in which order you should apply vehicle brake and trailer brake, etc. You also need to know the law and Highway Code relating to speed limits, trailer weights, etc. Otherwise, my impression is that it was fairly straightforward.

Just read from the link above...

"Car licences obtained before 1 January 1997
If you passed a car test before 1 January 1997 you keep your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. This means you're generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM). You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750 kgs MAM."

Not sure that some of these rules are as carefully thought out as they might be...my wife thinks the Matiz is a big enough car...I would hate to see her try to park 8.25 tons...

I didn't know about this! eek

I know I'm limited to 3.5 tonnes but didn't realise I had to take a separate test for a trailer?? I've driven plenty of times in Europe with a triple axle Ifor Williams which when loaded was probably close to the limit with the car too. (Volvo 850 Estate).
