looking for advice please

This is kind of a two part question, any advice on either is greatly welcomed though.
Firstly, I have a friend who is about to get his license back after a ban. He hasnt driven for over a year as he accepted his punishment and doesnt just want to get back into a car on the public highway in case he has an accident. I have advised him to find an empty car park, preferably around 10pm so there is no chance of anything else being there and spend 30 mins just getting used to driving again, is there any other advice you guys could offer.
secondly, I would like to do my advanced motoring test and he is thinking about it as well, is he allowed to do an advanced motoring course after having a ban?
any helpful advice appreciated.

First question - wouldnt have thought a year is long enough to forget anything, but go for a quiet drive in the country on a sunday afternoon to get used to the car, followed by some city driving to get used to built up areas.
Second question - shouldn't think IAM would refuse to let him take part for that reason - if anything given the nature of what they're about, and what their intentions are, they'd probably welcome the idea with open arms. Not saying they're in favour of people who've been banned, but sounds like he's learned his lesson, paid the price, and is keen to make honest amends. Good on him (both of you)
HTH.

have just given him a call after seeing your post, he had a clean license before the ban so has no points on it now that he has it back.
Yes, encourage him to take the IAM course.Great value.
It will provide the necessary mindset.
To know when speed is appropriate.
That is sort of outside of the IAM.
Yet, what many here exhibit.
An intelligent approach.
Red ringed, obey.
Modern technology provides additional help.
