Police Advanced Drivers Course
Discussion
My understanding is that you will join as a full member without having to take the Test, so cost would be Membership only...no Test fee.
You will be more than welcomed by any IAM Group - anywhere near Chelmsford?
BOF.
PS - We have a retired Class 1 in the Group...happy to put you in contact if you want a chat?

Response usually equated to a Grade 3 or 4. Advanced was a Grade 1 or 2.
Basically an advanced course is looking for greater skill, better lines and overall more polish to the drive. A lot more to it than that obviously. Whereas to pass a "response" course, the standard is lower - (still high) but the examiner is looking for a safe, systemised drive, sometimes with restrictions on the excess speed that is allowed when responding.
I'm sure someone will explain this better than me!

Put very simply, a standard response course is a three week course to allow officers to drive low performance cars on general patrol and emergency respose.Basically an advanced course is looking for greater skill, better lines and overall more polish to the drive. An advanced course is a four week (or in some forces 5, including a weeks pursuit driving) course for officers who have already passed a standard course, upgrading them to allow them to drive high performance cars.
The principles of both courses are the same, but the advanced course is taught in faster cars and has a higher pass mark.
Thanks R U Local!
Although some forces (mine) have a 5 week 'standard' course which inc. a week of blues/twos, which is actually referred to as an 'intermediate' course and this qualifies you to drive area/traffic cars. Advanced course is then another 4 weeks.
But most forces do a 3 week 'standard' course followed by advanced training to inc. pursuit which is actually much more sensible.

"That's the case for a response course, not just an advanced course."
Von,
Can you elaborate on the difference between the two levels?
BOF.
In simple terms the basic principles (as far as the driving is concerned) for 'standard response' (aka level 3) & 'advanced' (aka level 1 or 2) are the same.Von,
Can you elaborate on the difference between the two levels?
BOF.
It's the same four S's & the same system after all.
If you were to think of perfection in relation to each of the four S's as a horizontal line on a page, then for the 'advanced' level, you just can't fall short of those lines as often or as far as you can for 'standard response' level & still pass. A higher level of consistent performance in relation to all four S's is required.
Level 1 & 2 will be in bigger, faster cars.
Level 1 will include tactical pursuit while levels 3 & 2 don't. They are only initial phase pursuit courses, level 2 in big cars, level 3 in little cars.
