RoSPA

Ive been considering doing some advanced driving since ive had my licence over 1 year. Is it true that a civilian can take the police advanced drivng course? as in

www.tulliallan.police.uk/prospectu

Else ive been looking at IAM and RosPA, which one to choose, do you know which one offers the equivalent of the roadcraft driving system used in the above website? Which one really is the best. I already have pass plus so im looking for the next step.
Im doing this party for insurance reasons so which one is likely to give the biggest discounts.

I don't know for sure but I doubt it.

I've done the IAM course but have no experience of RoSPA. From what I've read they're exactly the same as each other, except that RoSPA is graded Bronze, Silver and Gold whereas IAM is just pass or fail. One factor might be how near the groups are to you. There are more IAM groups than RoSPA groups. I would guess that neither one is better than the other but that certain observers are better than others. Both organisations teach the techniques contained in the book Roadcraft, most importantly the 'system of car control'.

Supposedly, neither organisation allows you to get great reductions in insurance cost. I'm interested to see what difference it'll make when I next renew. However, it is claimed that you are less likely to have an accident and will benefit financially that way.

This isn't a civilian course. This bit gives it away:

"available in the Police Service in Scotland." from the above web link.

I spent yesterday on a one-day course with Mike Cooper (instructormike on PH) who taught my dad and I some advanced driving. It was a good day. Before we booked with him he advised us to read the Roadcraft book so that we'd have a better base knowledge for the day. During the day itself we started from some basics such as driving around town, then moved on to motorways and then some rural NSL driving.

I'm not sure that I'm the kind of person who could do the IAM as it seems rather rigid in its rules etc, but what Mike does is explain why things are necessary, taking the best parts of IAM and RoSPA, almost making a customised style of advanced driving. Most importantly, it was fun, which meant that I didn't tune out while he was talking! I felt that I learnt a lot from the day, as did Burns Snr.

Give him an email if you fancy it ~ he also does things like track day tuition as well.

Did i not make it clear that i was investigating options perhaps being that this is availiable to the police and knowing they get discouts would perhaps intice me to start looking for something of that standard.

I phoned my local IAM group about 6 times, the one based in edinburgh and nobody got back to me.

No, you didn't. You were asking whether this course was available to civilians. It isn't.

I think with RoSPA there is a membership fee and annual subscription, this may also be true of IAM, it would be great if someone could confirm whether this is true or not and how much both groups are likely to charge if it is.

As I understand it both IAM and RoSPA have the aim of making the roads a better and safer place for all who use it by volunteering their services to first learn, then practice and teach better road craft. I am also considering joining 1 of these 2 organisations, and have yet to read road craft so it's time I looked into getting this book first.

There are two components - the national membership fee, and, if so desired, the local membership fee (for both organizations).

Currently IAM is £17.50 national (gets you the magazine) and around £8-10 for local membership
RoADAR is £20 national membership (keep paying for three years and your re-test is free) and local membership is about the same as IAM.

To be a local member you must be a national member too. (I think?)

Incidentally, I looked up Road Craft on Amazon and found a book specifically aimed at Police drivers, is this the same book that the posters on here are talking about when they mention Road Craft, if not can someone please post a bit more detail about the right book for me.

Thanks.
