Joining the IAM - Basingstoke area?
Discussion
I've been poking around the IAM website a little recently, and am looking into joining up for some observed drives. I have said for a while that I'll get round to joining up one day, and it occured to me this evening that I might actually do so!
Anyway - I live to the south of Marlborough, and there's no group immediate nearest group. I think the nearest group on the IAM website is listed as being up in Swindon, but I seem to recall a while ago something regarding the IAM in Basingstoke being posted up on PH, and that one or more members are PH regulars? How well would a 21 (going on 40 if I'm honest!) year old guy fit into the IAM, or this group specifically?
One last question - I've seen the £85 joining fee listed on the website. I understand that gets you a certain amount of observed drives, and access to come along to talks and meetings, but are there any additional costs for the test, or anything else?

I am an Observer with the Basingstoke IAM Group.
You would fit in just fine. Say hello if you join!
£85 quid pays for:
1) First year of IAM Central Membership
2) First year of IAM Basingstoke Group membership
3) One go at the the IAM Advanced test - most pass first time
4) A copy of the "Pass Your Advanced Driving Test" book (you will need to read it)
4) As many "Observed" drives as you need to get yourself ready (usually 8 to 10).
We call Instructors/Tutors "Observers" but they're instructors really.
They are ALL voluntary. Some are better than others - at different aspects of instruction - so we adopt a system where if you don't get on you can change Observer and you also get drives out with different Observers on the second Sunday of each month.
Marlborough is quite a way from Basingstoke, though. You would be better off joining your most local Group as you will need to meet evenings and weekends etc for your instruction.
Do have a go! I guarantee you will learn *something*.
Feel free to ask any questions...
