I'm thinking about taking my motorcycle test. I'm passed the RoADRA test (car) and am slightly worries that if I were to transfer the principles of Roadcraft from car to bike, I might fail. Things like positioning for bends, etc..

Has anyone experience of doing this?

Thanks

Hi there,

Great! Welcome to two wheels and a world of freedom and tremendous enjoyment.

Unfortunately, you are correct to be concerned. I had done a fair bit of advanced car driving prior to taking up biking.

On test, I used Roadcraft positioning on the bike and failed for doing so. I even had a cordial chat with my DSA Examiner about it afterwards. He explained that I couldn't use advanced positioning on test, even though he'd passed his advanced test himself and understood what I was doing. How ridiculous is that?

To pass my L-test, I had to unlearn Roadcraft positioning, which took considerable effort. Changing my habits from "Roadcraft" to "DSA" only served to leave me temporarily confused and less safe.

I can understand why advanced positioning isn't taught at L-test level. However, if you are already doing it well, it seems nonsense that you can't ride to Roadcraft on test.

Once you've passed, however, there are loads of advanced biking groups around. Unlike advanced driving, advanced riding is growing tremendously.

Have fun
