What is the History between John Lyon and the HPC?

They seemed to have been very close until recently. Was there a big falling out?

Up until November 2004, John had been for many years the only route into the Club, via HPC(2001) Ltd. The Club wanted to take ownership of its own entry standards and appointed two additional 'gatekeepers' to permit people who perhaps didn't get on with John to gain access to the Club. This was agreed at Committee level (John was a ex-officio member of the committee at this time).

In January 2005 John was de-listed as a gatekeeper for reasons wholly uninvolved with his training skills. He is still out there training, but cannot recommend clients to the High Performance Club. HPC(2001) Ltd still exists but again, cannot recommend clients to the Club.

I think John has recently launched some sort of Gold Driving Club which is claimed to be the highest level of civilian driving award available.

Yes, John did indeed try to start such as Club. I was one of a number of people he invited to work towards membership. However, these days I'm more focussed on 'biking than driving.

The highest civilian standard of road driving is considered to be HPC Gold. StressedDave has posted the HPC Standards here, or you can look through www.hpc.org.uk for them. Without doubt HPC Gold is a very high level of skill, probably beyond what many drivers could imagine possible.

John Lyon was one of the three people who got the High Performance Club going. After many years together, when John Lyon and the High Performance Club parted their ways, John looked to set up a similar club of his own. This is his Gold Driving Club.

The High Performance Club's Gold and John Lyon's Gold standards are extremely similar, if not identical. Although StressedDave will know better than me.

There is no civilian 'biking equivalent to HPC Gold, so RoSPA Gold is only as far as the Noddy badges go. However, UK Advanced was/is setting up a riding club that could be similar to the High Performance Club. For example, like HPC, entry requires successful completion of UK Advanced's 3-day course under police Class 1 riding instruction. See the Rider Club section of the News: www.advanced-motorcycle-training.co.uk/

Cheers

Actually StressedDave has no idea what John's standards are - John was always adamant that it was impossible to define any of the standards for membership of HPC. However, most of those that helped formulate the Club standards passed through John's hands at some point so no doubt there was some influence along the way.
