Facial reconstruction following air bag deployment
Discussion
To expand the question
Has there ever been a documented case where a driver who had his forearms across the steering wheel whilst driving had to receive substantial surgery as he foreams hit his face when the airbag deployed?
The reason i ask is my BiL is a rather narrow minded person in driving techniques who thinks the IAM/Rospa/ Roadcraft methods of 10 to 2 and feeding the wheel whilst cornering is tosh. He is continually having both hands together when cornering resulting in 50p cornering and not only that, his normal position is left hand on his lap or it hanging over the wheel like ( is is cripple driving or monkey hanging?)
He does not read road markings nor road signs, and was adamant that going north on the A331 yesterday approaching the 'three counties' started berating the council for not showing what lane he should be in. These were at the traffic lights just before the car sales supermarket.
My driving is not perfect .but i strive to keep it at a high standard ( 2 certs to prove it..lol, but no GCSE!)
I just want to bring it up in casual !! conversation in the hope he realised how bad his steering technique is ( one step st a time folks!) and the gorier the better...lol

We present the case of an open forearm fracture with the previously unreported phenomenon of high-energy foreign body impaction into the exposed medulla, as a result of airbag deployment in a low velocity collision. A 34-year-old male driver was involved in a road traffic accident (RTA). He was the restrained driver in a car travelling at 10–15mph which was struck on the passenger side by another car travelling at 15–20mph. The driver reported that he was driving with his left arm positioned across the steering wheel while making a turn at the time of impact. He sustained a grade III b open fracture of the left radius and ulna.
Might be of interest. Be aware there are some fairly grim pictures of the forearm injury in there, nearly put me off my lunch
55 to 60mph, straight, dry, good road surface, vehicle waiting at junction on the left for the vehicles to their right to pass, two in front of me, then me, about 2+ seconds behind the vehicle in front.
Car in junction goes for it as soon as the car in front of me has passed them. I have about 15m to stop in. We contact each other with me hitting them just a bit forward of their centre.
Anyone care to estimate the impact speed, or consult google?
I reckon it must have been at least 45, possibly 50.
I know what I thought would happen in those circumstances. I was wrong.
No injury at all from the air bag (none of those terrible burns I've seen in pics) and not a hint of any whiplash. Gobsmacked.
(OK, I wasn't driving, but it was easier to write this in the first person - I reckon my wife braked a fraction of a second later than I would have. She had her hands in a sensible place on the wheel, and no injury from the airbag, though she did get significant chest bruising and knee injury from the steering column - her high BMI would have contributed to that).
I got out of the habit of 1 minute to 12 steering many years ago after I realised how airbags worked...
If anyone has experience in analysing this sort of stuff I'd be very interested in adjusting my estimates of speed/distance etc. I've done measurements on street view etc in order to get a better understanding of the geometry, speed (using the road markings) etc but I'm pretty sure I'm not all that accurate.
Note to the insurer haters: The 3rd party insurers were extremely quick to deal with this, tried to lowball her, gave in a bit with evidence, though it was extremely disappointing that they tried it on, and snatched the loan car away immediately on payout (good job we're a two car household), but none of that surprised me at all, and is sort of understandable. And no noticeable increase on her insurance at next renewal - er, well that's not entirely correct - she went with LV= (and has stayed with them since (4 years)) because they were cheaper than her previous insurer.
It was very difficult car to find an equivalent - the petrol version couldn't pull the skin off custard, but the diesel I insisted the other half bought if she ever expected me to drive it, goes like a bat out of hell (ish, and very relatively) - once it's out of 1st... Handles like a bus on corners though.
She ended up with the higher spec trim, and found the only one in the country at that time (yes, really!) - and only 20 miles away. It was black though..., but otherwise completely identical - almost exactly the same age and mileage.
But I was so impressed with the insures (and their prices) that I went with them when I came to renew my own insurance, and have been with them for the last four years. LV=.
