"Taster" car handling courses - need suggestions.
Discussion
Hi I'm thinking christmas presents, budget up to around £150 each.
Anyone have any suggestions of a half-day "course" that will teach you things like recovering from a skid, understeer/oversteer, skid pan/ice/snow, safer road driving (country lanes etc), handling skills? With some fun stuff int here too? I had a look through the "links" post but they are mainly track oriented or fast driving.
Preferably in "normal" hatchbacks rather than performance cars (they have both done a performance day already).
Area of country, anywhere along the A1 south of York preferably.
THanks!

Might be worth trying to track down a company that has a "skid car" ?
Drove one of the earlier ones (with the cradle outside) and one of the later ones (with steerable rear wheels that can also simulate front wheel lock up) in the past (probably in the 80s/90s).
Learned a lot from both.

I would split the ask into two aspects.
1. Avoiding going over the limit of grip
- Check out IAM/ROADAR or someone like RegLocal. They can coach you in Roadcraft and safe, smooth progress.
2. Exploring limit handling
- Check out Andy Walsh/Don Palmer style coaches who can coach on how to recognise approaching, reaching and exceeding the limit, typically in an airfield environment with lots of run off. Best done in the rain or icy conditions to minimise tyre wear!
After the above, I didn’t get much out of a skid pan session.
As always, YMMV but on your budget, I’d be going the Roadcraft route
