Some complete idiots suddenly brakes in the 3rd lane of the A1 because they see a car waiting to cross. Yes, I know the following cars should be able to stop in time, but honestly, I bet this would catch out at least 90% of the drivers on the road.

Dare I say it, both cars that crashed should have actually been in the inside lane too.
But yes totally 90% of drivers would have also rear ended the car that "just stopped".
The white car could have / should have pulled into the inside lane and not just jumped on the brakes.
There are a few junctions like that round here, I am very aware of the higher chance of "an event" when passing them.

Did the "idiot" brake or did the Tesla perceive a threat and brake itself?
Most of the cars we have had over the last 10 years have thrown up the red car symbol on the dash from time to time (crow on verge, roadworks sign on verge, most times I have no idea of the reason). I am glad none have had autonomous braking. . . . although the current one may have auto emergency brake!Idiot in second car too close.

Before we all pile on the white car, someone on the st Driving thread rightly observed that the Tesla appears to have no brake lights
Meanwhile in the 'People who have working eyes' thread, we can clearly see the brake lights on the Tesla as it slows down. Pile on justified. snotrag said:

I have no problem with criticism of white car, either too close or not paying attention- but Tesla cannot be blameless- stopping in lane 2 of a fast road for no reason is poor driving. If it was a defect in the car's systems as suggested that might exonerate the Tesla driver from blame, but it cannot somehow make the other driver more at fault!

Both drivers could have avoided it!
clearly they didn't observe well enough. in the above clip you can see immediately as the Tesla enters the frame the brake lights were on, then go off. Both drivers could have avoided it!
Both at fault.
Tesla for stopping as if it was a gridlocked typical high street, and presumably not even checking his mirrors.
White car for being too close, although maybe with plenty of traffic behind even the 2s rule would not have helped in this case.
Worrying that, as suggested, the car may have decided to stop.

Indeed. Having had the pleasure of owning a Tesla that would st itself and put the anchors on if it saw a shadow, it really wouldn’t surprise me.
Ours does it too. I reckon in this case, the driver was using Cruise control, car saw the vehicle in the middle as a hazard, and slammed the brakes on it.

Brake lights are clearly visible for a moment at the start of the video. Both drivers played an active part in the collision but 99% of the time it's the one behind that gets nailed for "liability". Gassing Station | Advanced Driving | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
