How many would have (blindly )driven past.
Discussion
That was a quote from PAUL.B in the "second driving incident" that i posted earlier, it reminded me of an accident i came across a few years back when about 25 vehicles, mostly trucks slowed down and drove past a smashed up truck without stopping.
It happened about 2 miles south of Knutsford services on the north bound side.
As i approached the back of a stationary artic straddling the shoulder and the slow lane i realised his curtain had burst open and large rolls were in the centre lane.
It was cold but i decided that if i stop and help maybe we could get 2 lanes mobile and keep traffic moving so i stopped behind him to block the centre lane so that we did`nt get hit.
I used my mobile to call the BIB while i walked up to see how the driver was, What i saw next took my breath away.
The cab of the truck had hit the bridge support right in the middle, part of the cab wrapped itself round the bridge on the embankment side and the remaining half had stuffed its self up into the roof of the bridge.
The only part of the truck that looked like anything was the drivers door and the window frame of that was half the size.
The trucks were still driving past very slowly but the only other person to stop was a Transit driver who looked as shocked as i felt, i said "quick turn your van round get your headlight on it".
I remember saying to the operator "we need Police and Fire don`t bother with the Ambulance the guy MUST be dead, then the Transit driver said "hes alive "and pointed to the smashed drivers door window.
He waved his arm and shouted for us to get him out
I just talked to him and tried to keep him positive.
The cab had completly lift the chassis and the engine was ticking like it was really hot, I have never seen anything like it.
He was called Andrew and he came from Penrith, when the police arrived and they saw me talking to him (i never did find out what he looked like) they said "keep him talking".
When the firemen arrived i left the scene but how the hell other trucker could drive past without stopping was disgusting.
I phoned the Police the next and they told me it took them 3 hours to get him out and he lived. One very lucky man.
The reason for the accident.
An Asda truck doing 40mph was hit up the arse by Andrew, it broke the trucks back, the landing legs dug in and fired the truck off to the left.
For some strange reason the Asda truck did not stop for at least 500 yards, I think the M6 was closed for 12 hours.
