IAM / RoSPA training - Leicester(shire)

I did IAM training with the Leicester group and I thought it was pretty poor.
They do Sunday sessions every other Sunday, half an hour in a room chatting with other candidates then 20 minutes in the car with an observer with another candidate in the back. That’s the end of the session, if you were in the back then you get to drive with the observer.
The classroom sessions were on different areas of the system and advanced driving. If you miss a session then tough. There was no one to one training sessions so that you could really focus on your deficiencies other than the 20 minute drives.
I did three sessions then I just put in for the test because they were having a couple of months off the Sunday sessions for summer. Overall I thought it was very poor.
I learnt a lot more through watching the videos by Reg Local.
It was massively different to the motorbike training that I’d done previously, if I hadn’t done that then it would have taken a very long time to pick up everything about the system. I don’t know if this is typical of the difference between the bike and car training.

Consider "ROSPA" instead. I have done both. For me Rospa is better as you have to resit the assessment every 3 years or so to stay qualified.
I was not impressed with my IAM "Observer" as he was a failed Driving Instructor, so just did the one session with him, put in for my test and passed it.
My experience with Rospa was better, my "Observer" was an old lady of about 75, and she knew her stuff and surprised me with her knowledge and was a great coach. I am due my next check run in the near future, and of course each time you take it you want to get a "Gold" pass.
Buy a copy of "road craft" and start learning the system

My local IAM group allows members to have a have a 1hr check driver with an Observer, FOC, whenever they wish ending with a discussion on their stanard of driving.
An IAM members can retake the IAM test whenever they wish but will need to pay a fee.
IAM Fellow members MUST re-take the test every 3 years.
