Just asking out of interest ....

I was driving up the M42 the other day in a variable speed limit zone and encountered a temp limit due to congestion (50). After a few miles, the overhead signs displayed no limit, but there was no national speed limit displayed.

At what point would you conclude the limit was back to normal .... (I was only a few miles from the M6, so just sat at 50 until I reached that).

Oddly a similar thing happened on the way home, 40 mph temp limit for roadworks, fair enough - I passed the works van at the end of the cones, and overhead signs were blank, back to a normal motorway.
There I was sitting at 40 with everyone else getting a move on (40 in my opinion is getting to be dangerously slow on a motorway) all overhead signs still blank until about 3 mies later where they displayed the national sign.

There should be an "end" display once the temporary limit is over - its possible that the blank sign is faulty and if functioning could be showing "end" or "50" - bit of a gamble in my view to assume its back to NSL so I would tend to stick to the limit if cameras are active until the next sign, if thats also blank I would feel comfortable with assuming its NSL.
