so today on approach to motorway at the sliproad , firstly had noticed it was busy so was going about 40-45 initially .then I saw a gap big enough so speed up to 60 but then the gap got smaller so increased speed to 80 upon entering so I’d be going faster than car behind and little time to mess about .I realise this was bad driving but not sure what else i could or should have done differently ? If I slowed down then would have likely been rear ended

Run out of road?
Why would you have not just entered the hard shoulder instead of what it sounds like you’re implying which is to have stopped at the end of the slip road?
No ,stopping is far most dangerous .entered motorway at 80mph Why would you have not just entered the hard shoulder instead of what it sounds like you’re implying which is to have stopped at the end of the slip road?
Nothing to see here!

I guess there is a lot of variables with this so can’t be a clear answer in some cases Source: John Lyon.
not sure why the few cars in question didn’t slow down slightly to more like 67 or move to lane 2 .
I know they don’t have to but it was obvious i intended on using the gap and was already at 65 by then
I'm wondering why this is in the 'Advanced Driving' section?
Crash into flowing traffic, or stop and get rear ended.
Or use the hard shoulder to either wait for a safe gap, or accelerate into a safe gap.
This is pretty basic 'Survival Driving'.
Certainly not advanced.
A quick car comes in very useful in these circumstances!

It's a bit like the old nautical thing about never get caught on a lee shore.
I regularly drive in the Oxfordshire / Berkshire stretch of the A34 which has some of the most evil short slip roads in existence. Sometimes the best thing to do is to get yourself positioned nicely parallel to Lane 1, watch your mirror, take a life saver glance and when the hole comes FLOOR IT
