Hi All,

Can please someone clarify green filter arrow and what it means?

Just green light by itself (filter arrow off) - Can you move and wait in the middle and turn right giving priority to oncoming cars?

I have attached a picture from google maps, as an example. Can that red car move and wait in the middle giving way to oncoming traffic before turning right? or should stop behind the stop line and wait for that filter arrow to turn on?

If I was using that junction I’d pull into the middle.

There is a similar junction close to where I work, if a car doesn’t pull into the middle and wait the turn filter will not activate to allow right turners to cross the junction.
So bloody annoying when people dont do it at peak times and sit there for x amount cycles of the lights !

If you were required to wait at the stop line to turn right then the filter would have It's own red and Amber light.

When the lights turn green you move to the middle and if a gap comes before the filter turns green you go.

If they didn’t want you to turn right, they’d be another green arrow for straight ahead only.

^ Note that both arrows are not always illuminated at the same time. The straight ahead only arrow might only be illuminated.

However, when you turn right still be on the look out and give way to oncoming traffic ( such as the car in the photo with the daylight running lights on, that/has just crossed the white line, they might be going ahead on a green).

Along the same lines, yellow boxes on junctions.

People who don't use them when turning right and their exit is clear do my head in.

There's one I regularly notice drivers sitting behind the stop line in the same sort of setup as above but with a yellow box on the road, and then the right filter doesn't come on. There's been times I've been tempted to use the left lane to go straight on and pull in front of the right turner in the box.

It's near Burton on Trent police station (with the station on your right as you head towards Derby A38) if anyone knows it.

Thank you for your answer

They have now updated that junction, now it has yellow box (criss-cross yellow) do I still proceed ? As far as i know you may enter that box and wait if you want to turn right.

If there are no red lights showing you can proceed, even if there is a yellow box junction. Obviously you have to wait till safe to cross.
You can think in terms of ‘you may proceed unless told otherwise’ (red light, no entry sign etc).

A Google of "Highway code box junctions" says

"Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (download ‘Road markings’). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic"

Assuming the OP has a licence its a tad worrying that this question even comes up, but it does at least help to explain a lot of what happens in most dashcam videos...

No. Green means proceed if safe to do so.
In the picture shown, the red car can move forward past the stop line if the driver wishes to turn right, assuming it is safe to do so.

I failed a driving test for this. The exit was clear to turn right as I entered the box, but filled up with cars that had turned left because someone had stopped. Lights changed and left me stranded. I asked what I could have done differently but the examiner said that he wouldn't/couldn't discuss.
