People who accelerate to block overtake
Discussion
Stuck behind driver doing an indicated 20 in a 30 zone. Very frustrating but then I realised that I was on a long straight bit of road, dashed lines, good visibility and no junctions. So why didn't I just overtake?
Indicated and pulled out to go round the other car, only for them to accelerate as I was in the other lane. Managed to get ahead of the fool, though I of course never went above 30 officer and they flashed me as I pull in ahead of them.
What makes this even more ridiculous is I left this car miles behind and I never went above an indicated 30 on the speedo, which is about 25mph on my car. So I was hardly speeding.
I just don't get the attitude. If people want to drive slow, fair enough but why do they get angry when people overtake them?

Obviously they were more comfortable with everybody being behind them... That way, they can just enjoy THEIR journey without all the hassle of concentrating on any other vehicles.
Perhaps they flashed you...as a polite ‘you’re clear to pull back in now’ message.
I hope you acknowledged... winds me up if they don’t.

From what you’ve said I’d the overtaken driver either (a) genuinely but mistakenly thought the limit was 20; or (b) more plausibly thought that whatever the limit actually was, 20 was the max safe speed anyone should be doing on that road. Either way, a bit of a tit.

Could (or would) the Police do anything about driving too slowly or indeed turning the overtake into a dangerous situation?
I would have thought 'A' would be Driving without due care, and 'B' would be Dangerous Driving ??
My wife was pulled over for doing 30 in a 40 limit. Although it was 2am on a Saturday morning so did look a bit suspicious.I would have thought 'A' would be Driving without due care, and 'B' would be Dangerous Driving ??
I’d of overtaken too and when he sped up and I was able to pass him just pull in front as he’s at my bumper and just carry on but thinking to myself what a right t#t he is for doing that. No need to speed up when someone’s overtaking especially if your going slower than the actual speed limit. Not worth getting worked up about.
Trouble is sometimes, depends how far they’re willing to accelerate and how far your willing to go to get in front. I’ve had it a few times on motorways too and I really don’t understand peoples thinking.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 (section 3) it is an offence to drive a motor vehicle on a road or public place “without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place”. if your driving can be said to “inconvenience” other road users, you are likely to be convicted for inconsiderate driving. This offence can be proved in court by the testimony of another road user.
The wide description of the offence means that all manner of things can qualify as inconsiderate driving. The CPS has a non-exhaustive list of examples on its website:
Flashing of lights to force other drivers in front to give way
Misuse of any lane to avoid queuing or to gain an advantage over other road users
Unnecessarily remaining in an overtaking lane (popularly known as “middle lane hogging”)
Unnecessarily slow driving, or braking without good cause
Driving with undipped headlights which dazzle other road users
Driving through a puddle causing pedestrians to be splashed

No it was the angry flash because I dared to overtake them. Now if it is illegal to overtake in a 30 zone and I made a mistake, fair enough. I am pretty sure that isn't the case.Perhaps they flashed you...as a polite ‘you’re clear to pull back in now’ message.

As for the digs about basic driving, move this thread if it bothers you that much. I am not fussed.
Though I am interested what you're suppose to do if someone accelerates to block the overtake. Should you speed up to complete the overtake or pull back and abort?

This is why adopting advanced techniques really helps… basically arriving at the back of the car near overtaking speed so they don’t have a chance to boot it!
This basically!Hang back, give yourself plenty of space, when you see the opportunity arise, accelerate into the gap you've created, by time they've realised you're gaining quickly, you can move out and overtake before they have chance to attempt to block you. Easy peasy.
Most hilarious one I've had like this recently was some poor young chap in one of those massive, slow, black pickup things (Warrior, Navara etc) when I'm on a 1200cc motorbike, 40 in a 50, move out to overtake and decides he is too important to be overtaken, very gentle twist on the throttle soon sorted that. Then decided to tailgate through the next 30 when he finally caught up, got to the next national, became a large, slow black blip. Next 30, back up my arse. Got bored eventually so gave him a cheery wave goodbye and just twisted on at the next national, never saw it again. Why do they even bother against bikes?!

Many years of spending far to much time behind the wheel of unwieldy, slow to accelerate vehicles has led me to be of the opinion to just cut them up. If they are of the opinion that they can impede others & in some cases place other road users in direct danger then I have absolutely no second thoughts about impeding their progress.
If they want to play chicken with a steel rear bumper then so be it, always get a chuckle at the stereotypical business spec bimmer driver waving his hands erratically after his attempt to be a dick fails.
