Right turn from roundabout
Discussion
At a local roundabout the signs show to use the left lane to turn right if you wish to turn left at the next lights, otherwise you use the right hand lane.
Is using a right signal once on the roundabout appropriate here when turning right from the left lane? This will warn vehicles on the 12 o'clock junction that you're coming around, but I'm concerned that it can confuse cars turning right in the right lane (they may think I'm looking to change lanes).
I usually wait until I'm on the roundabout to signal as otherwise drivers/riders on my side would think I had chosen the wrong lane and was looking to change.
Any thoughts?

Sign on approach
Lane guidance on approach
Sign after roundabout and before traffic lights
So for A638 you'd use the left lane to turn right at the roundabout, which will then leave you in the left lane for the lights.

Although now I notice the "continuation of road" (ref https://youtu.be/TU4Ty4HgLyI ) is to the right, so maybe no right signal needed at all?

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The advisory signage seems to be indicating that you should keep to the nearside (left) lane if you want to take the 1st or 2nd exits (eg. Leeds, Garforth, etc) and the off-side (right-hand) lane if you want to take the 3rd exit to Wakefield, the station, etc. Please let me know if I've completely misunderstood your question.
The signage seems fairly straightforward. Clearly there must have been lane confusion on the roundabout, not too sure why. The sign might be there because vehicles have come into conflict because some drivers are using the nearside lane to go all the way round to exit 3 whilst other drivers are taking the outside lane and then cutting across to leave at the 2nd exit. But that's not uncommon at many roundabouts. Another possible explanation is that at busy times there is a queue on the roundabout approach for vehicles wishing to take exits 1 or 2 and some drivers are trying to jump the queue by taking the right-hand lane and creating conflict at these exits with other drivers who have been patiently queueing. Who knows?
As for signalling, there are no hard and fast rules in advanced driving only the principle that... "we give a signal if, in our opinion, another road user would benefit". So, yes, signal if you think another road user would benefit and then cancel it immediately you think it might have become misleading for another road user.
Hope that helps.

From my experience on this roundabout local to me...
I've done a few Advanced sessions on here and my suggestion (and what I actually do) is indicate right from the left hand lane making sure I hug the left curb and stay out of any vehicles blindspot.
Reason being is I need to inform the vehicles waiting at the left hand junction of my intentions but by keeping left I don't alarm anyone on the inside lane.
Only ever had one near miss here and that was someone in the nearside lane, not indicating, who decided he suddenly wanted the inside lane half way around. Luckily staying out of blindspots saved me there. Damage would have been alot more expensive on his Audi R8 as opposed to my Volvo estate!

Exactly what I was thinking, and what I do already. I've done a few Advanced sessions on here and my suggestion (and what I actually do) is indicate right from the left hand lane making sure I hug the left curb and stay out of any vehicles blindspot.

However, after noticing the thick line on my roundabout for the 3rd junction, watching the Ashley Neal YouTube video suggests my third exit is to be treated as straight on rather than right. Therefore no signal needed.
Hmm... I'll try it to see, but the Ashley Neal approach strikes me as less safe.

Also it advises the nearside for Northgate (Wakefield), which is the right turn I reference (right at roundabout 3rd junction, left at lights) and for the A638 I mentioned as an example (as you can see this is on the sign after you've turned right at the roundabout, 3rd image).
Ah, I see what you mean. I was getting confused because the 1st exit is also "Leeds Road", and that's the exit I thought you and the sign were referring to. But you're quite right the sign is referring to "Leeds Road", the third exit. I now understand.Gassing Station | Advanced Driving | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
