How have you changed your driving style based on things you've read on here?

I've started leaving a much larger gap when pulling back in, after overtaking buses and lorries. Give them a bit more braking room.

Also don't let as much people out of junctions etc. I used to go a bit overboard with that.

The most important thing I have learnt is about ‘eye saccades’. The movement the eyes make between two focal points, and the phenomenon that the points in between are not taken in by the brain. Search online for more details - well worth it, it may save a cyclist/motorcyclists life.

Similar for me. I positively check twice at junctions now with a physical body move to change viewing aspect, rather than just the single check I had fallen into the habit of doing.

Merge at point instead of 3 miles prior.

The benefit has been huge.
1. Massive improvement to my attitude toward driving, which I now think of as a craft to be continuously improved on.
2. Learning to analyse incidents from the point of view of "what could I have done differently?" rather than blaming everyone else around me.
3. I used to take personally every indescretion made by other road users. PH gave me an insight into the minds of other drivers, particularly ones I disagree with, and now I'm far, far more relaxed.

I actually make allowances for other road users because they don't have 10 years' worth of Pistonheads wisdom to draw upon.

Similar to me. It’s remembering everyone has different experience/confidence behind the wheel.

I also find myself lifting off the gas before the three cars in front of me as I've seen something they haven't further along the road.

I've become aware of Reg Local's videos through PH and have learned a lot from watching them which hopefully has improved my driving.

Through following countless threads over the years I've had my own long standing suspicions confirmed regarding the arrogance and fk you entitlement of a substantial minority of people who mostly own - or claim to own, this is PH after all - certain marques or particularly ostentatious or performance orientated cars and that causes me maintain bigger gaps and drive more rather more defensively with heightened awareness of a particular mindset when in their proximity than I might otherwise have done.

The, go out into the countryside for a spin and the sudden drastic impact you can have on someone else and resulting punishment and changes to your life.

Similar.

In addition to this just having more patience in the village. Many elderly drivers, some over cautious… and it’s about well may be they don’t feel confident on a NSL road. Doesn’t mean they are stupid or dangerous. Just being more understanding.

I was taught to pull-in, after overtaking, when I could see BOTH, of that vehicles, headlamps in my rear view mirror.

as for 'letting people out' at junctions, where was that in the Highway Code ? did your driving instructor teach you that ? does every driver know what it means ??
DON'T DO IT -STOP THAT PRACTICE RIGHT NOW, before it becomes a 'thing'

That awareness came along long, long before pistonheads! It’s amazing how many can’t read the road and traffic ahead.

In the introduction…
‘ It is important that all road users are aware of The Highway Code and are considerate towards each other.’
But it is all about situation context. A big queue of slow moving traffic in front and behind, then why not? To be honest, around here it is more like a merge in turn situation. No-one stresses about it, knowing that they will often be stuck in that side junction waiting to come out. In a similar no-one sounds their horn much, just sensible considerate driving.

Again Pica-Pica shows, PH'ers how drivers bend the rules of the Highway Code ........... to suit themselves, with little consideration to other road users, especially those behind that 'naughty' driver.

when in court, the judge asks "Why"
reply "a guy on PH said I could"

Ha! If you are moving slowly, and the driver emerging is aware, it just takes a car’s length extra gap; the traffic hardly slows. My quote is all-encompassing, the best consideration for the best overall good. There is no fuss, no hassle, no-one gets irate, and it all moves quite smoothly.

Just admit to all here, your version of the Highway Code is NOT the same as that printed by the UK Government.

I always have the latest saved as a pdf file, so it is.
The thing is, if traffic does not flow freely, to the benefit of all, then quite simply, junctions become roundabouts, and at quieter times that interrupts with the smooth flow of traffic on the original main road.
