tucking into spaces to let cars pass - is it legal?

Yes, it’s legal and sensible driving by the dashcammer. It’s not illegal to park or drive on the ‘wrong’ side except in certain circumstances. Here there isn’t a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ side anyway as the road is effectively reduced to single track and drivers need to work out the most sensible ways to pass one another. If there's cars parked both sides then nobody has priority. I would pull in and let the incoming vehicle pass. If I pull in before the incoming car does, it means I'm a better driver. If both you and the oncoming car are waiting for each other and you decide to go, then indicate first.
