...when I drive to the speed limit?

Variable speed limit on M1 - daily commute, usually varies between 40, 50, 60, & 70mph over about 6 miles.

So even though I know which gantries have cameras, I stick exactly to the limit, with cruise control. I don’t brake heavily before a lower speed sign, rather ease off the throttle beforehand, yet there’s always some ahole who comes up behind me flashing his lights and being a - often in lane 1 (last time it was an hgv who hadn’t slowed from 50 to 40 despite the sign being visible for about 1/4 mile.

Sometimes if I’m in lane 2 or 3, it’s impossible to merge left due to people speeding down the inside.

Why don’t people simply drive to the limit? I often find the same dheads who overtook me at 20+ mph over the limit next to me at my exit junction roundabout.

Why?

I think LGVs often drive on the limiter even in 50 limits and don't understand why everyone else doesn't want to risk a ticket for their benefit. It's a problem on the increasingly ubiquitous single carriageway 50s as well.

It's sometimes useful to have a vent, but if everyone that does something you don't like is simply a or a dhead then you're not going to understand why they're doing it, or be able to find a solution.

Perhaps they've had a bad day?
Perhaps they're keen to get home to see their families?
Perhaps they know which gantries have cameras, but also know what the enforcement thresholds are?
Perhaps they're surprised to find a car in front of them slowing to 10mph below the current limit, whilst deliberately not showing brake lights?

I'm also assuming you're using a calibrated speedo of some kind - driving exactly at the limit isn't easy.

I'll bet you can guess what I'm going to say about this...

Well, you're annoyed too.

As an advanced driver shouldn't you be able to detach yourself from the emotion of dealing with "dheads, aholes and s" - let them get on with what they're doing, and simply handle their behaviour as part of your own drive ? There's nothing in Roadcraft that says it's a good idea to get annoyed with other drivers.

I wonder, if the OP were to consider returning to Lane 1 wherever possible, they might find this problem goes away? And by 'wherever possible', I mean, when not actually overtaking someone.

Totally relate to this.
Sit in lane 1 on cruise and in no time will have a HGV flashing you 2” off your tail.
Sometimes I’m convinced I’m looking at a different set of signs!

OP, if you’re driving at or around the speed limit and are still “always” (your choice of word) getting flashed by other road users, then there is a very high chance that you’re doing something else wrong.

I drive at the speed limit every day and very rarely get flashed, if at all. I don’t claim to be an advanced driver of any sort.

Perhaps you should consider your own driving ability if you’re “always” getting flashed.

I used to be an HGV driver, and tried to hammer through 50 restrictions on the motorway at 85kmh, which was what our truck limiters were set at. The number of people dicking about at between 43 and 48 mph in lane 2 used to have me almost in tears of frustration. I'd have been happy to overtake if they'd move to lane 1, but they'd sit there, apparently oblivious. I couldn't use lane 3, and didn't want to take the risk of passing in L1 in case the fkers did the right thing without checking their mirrors. Consequently, I spent hours on the M5 south between the M42 and J6 sitting at 44mph in L1. And now I don't drive for a living, which is almost certainly a good thing.

dr_gn it sounds as though your driving doesn’t show reasonable consideration for other persons using the road.

Op, the new stretch of 'smart' motorway at Leeds on the M62 is equally full of d*ckeads who know better; flooring it between gantries and hitting the brakes for the cameras. Ironically these are the d*ckheads that £millions was spent trying to cure. But no, d*ckheads know best, now the rest of us still get stuck in the queues they create.

If you really want some fun, try leaving a box junction clear in West Yorkshirethumbup

OP, have you checked the accuracy of your speedo against gps? Most speedos read over by 2-3mph, but some are up to 5mph over at motorway speeds (some Fords for example).

Your “driving exactly at the speed limit” may well be a few mph below the limit, which may be causing the ensuing frustration from the hard of thinking.

....and its this attitude thats causes you the grief.

By your own words you are being a nuisance out in lane 2 or 3. Regardless of whether "you" want to drive to your perceived speed limit , others may not and you have no god given right to Police the roads. Maybe the cars that want to overtake or undertake are using sat nav speeds ( i.e true speed not speedometer speed ). Even then , there is an element of error or one person may choose to go 2mph quicker than the next.

Pop yourself into lane 1 and let the world drift by. You will feel far better for it......... and so will everyone else !

My observation on this is.
Don't forget you speedo is slightly out, so this means if you dial in 50mph on the Cruse control, according to GPS you will be doing 47MPH,
The cameras on the gantries will be set up to take pictures at a speed of around 58 mph (GPS) ( if in a 50 zone)
So some people dial in 55MPH on cruise control.

So when I'm doing 50 according to my GPS, in lane 1, and a truck is getting impatient because they want to do 55, what am I supposed to do?

Exactly.

50 limit, you've just overtaken someone in lane 1, whose doing 45, then, between gantries they speed up to 60 (along with the queue behind) them, then what? You're stuck in lane 2, often with some other idiot up your tail wanting to keep up with lane 1.

Happens every day.

You're 5 mph over the limit.
