Daughter passed her test 8 months ago and I would like to get her some extra tuition/skills but not quite sure what to go for. Understanding how to handle difficult situations (losing back/front end) might be good (did consider some sort of skid pan training)
Anyone else done something for a relatively new driver?. She isnt a bad driver, i'd just like her to have as many skills as she can, and confidence to handle situations she might come across. thanks

Look out for the next HPC young drivers day. Here’s a write up of a couple of years back...

It depends how interested she is but outdoor karting on a wet days is an extremely cheap way getting to grips with it all.... time in a seat with a steering wheel and not much grip without any consequences is what’s needed.

Imo all the short courses do is improve instinctive technique but that technique needs to be there to begin with or you’re wasting your money.

This for sure.

Also a copy of roadcraft and some reg local videos to introduce concepts, and maybe an IAM depending on intrest levels.

Skid pan training is probably a waste of time - unless she's going to practice to the point where precision car control becomes instinctive, the chances of saving an unexpected loss of grip on a public road are limited. There's research evidence that giving young drivers this kind of training actually increases risk through over-confidence.

Much better to devote the time to observation, anticipation and planning. Better skills in these areas should largely avoid the need for limit handling techniques in the first place, and will also pay dividends in every single area of driving activity.

IAM or RoSPA are the well-known budget choices - alternatively, professional instructors are available. Don't expect anything from just a couple of hours work though - it'll need a minimum of a couple of days (or a full IAM course) for worthwhile results. Getting really good can be the work of a lifetime...

I took and passed the IAM course aged 18 after 6 months of driving. I think it really helped me and I enjoyed it.

My susgestion is you both do it together, then perhaps celebrate your passes with go karting or a skid pan day.

I agree with last two posts, go IAM or and ROSPA for further driver training, both will enhance her awareness, planing, road positioning, speed etc...

You can take the horse to water.....but does she want to do any of this?

Track days are fun, and also enhance her skills, I took both of mine to track days, and they learnt loads whilst enjoying the freedom of no oncoming traffic and the dreaded speed camera smile

Most 18 year olds want to drive for the freedom rather than fun. If she wants to be better then IAM/Roada would work. If she has a car with ESP then skid pan training may make things worse.

This may be worth a look - the High performance course are running a (very low cost) day for younger, inexperienced drivers that wish to improve their driving?

It may be something to consider?

Thanks all. She is back from uni for summer this weekend so we will have a bit of a chat about what she wants/thinks would work. As said above, she has got to want to do something before dad goes off booking things !

What's her interest level in cars/driving?

Does any particular aspect of her driving concern you?
