A light controlled junction nearby has just been renovated and now has cycle feeder lanes that begin about a car length before the first stop line. These are a new addition.
If I understand correctly they are there to remove the anomaly that theoretically stops bicycles moving into the ‘bike box’ when lights are red. However, to my mind, they have created a worse anomaly because they are bounded by a solid white line and the lane remaining is not wide enough for a car. Consequently any driver following the rules would have to move into the right hand lane when passing the feeder lane. This creates obvious issues if there are two lanes of traffic setting off at the lights.
I think only a complete pedant would hold up a line of traffic in this situation, but can’t help (as always) wondering how I would deal with this in a ROSPA re-test, or with a Police car behind me. Are the solid lines a painting mistake?
