Hiya, I want to book a driver training day for my husband as a gift. I want it to be in his own car but I have no clue where the best place to book it would be. Can anybody recommend?

I’ve looked on the forum but can only find posts from 5 years ago so wondered if anybody had any current recommendations or has done a day training themselves that they enjoyed?

Thank you

It just depends on what it is that you and your husband are looking to achieve with a driver training day.

If you're thinking of road based training, unfortunately, one isn't going to learn much in one day. There's simply just too much to learn.smile

His best option might be to arrange for a free assessment drive with his local IAMRoadsmart Group or his local RoSPA Group. With the IAM this is sometimes presented as costing approx £65, ie. not free, but you then get a discount of a similar amount if you sign up for the full course afterwards. Different local groups have different policies. This will give him a taste of what road-based driver training is all about before he commits to the full course. Both organisations' full courses consist of approx 10 drives of approx 2 hours duration, with a lot of practise in between. The cost for the full 10 session course in both cases is fairly modest; IAM approx £130; RosPA approx £75. The coaching/tutoring is delivered by volunteer members of each organisation.

If you live in the North West he could have a day with Reg Local (aka John Gregory). John is a retired police driving school instructor and is happy to take out drivers who have no previous advanced driver training. He can be found at http://www.reglocal.com/93-2/ or just Google Reg Local. He's based near Bolton.

However, if you're looking for a track driving day, then these are usually classified as "experience days" rather than coaching or training.

Good luck. Let us know what you decide upon.

Echo what has been said about road. IAM is practically free and a good start. For track etc then in his own car I don't have much experience but I do know Gary Marsh has walked the walk and should be able to sort something out.

You used the term Performance driver training in your thread title. I very strongly recommend the two course managers of the High Performance Course, one based in Banbury and the other in Wales. Both like Reg Local were advanced instructors in police driving schools, both have considerable track experience, and have been running performance oriented civilian driver training for longer than Reg.

However lucky you are with the volunteer observer/tutor allocated to you by a local advanced driving group, the quality of coaching by a true professional is vastly higher.

Thanks for everyones responses. That’s really helpful 😊 He drives an M3 so it was more track day training I was thinking in his car. I’ve seen silverstone do a training day and I came across the need4speed website when I was browsing so think I might have a look at him.

If he likes track stuff then that's great and he'll learn to handle the car at the limit on a track much more effectively.

How often will he be tracking it compared to driving it on the road and able to use those skills? If your budget stretches then a day with either of the three individuals mentioned would complement the track stuff and make him a much more effective road driver.

He will use the car on the road more than the track but he takes it on weekends away to the Nurburgring and does European trips round the passes so something to advance his handling and get the most out of the car is what I’m looking for

So actually the sort of training available from the three trainers we have recommended above is ideal for enjoying a high performance car on demanding roads such as Alpine passes where limit handling is not relevant. For the Ring I would recommend a Ring specialist such as Apex.

For track day training I'd recommend Mark Hales, who you can contact through his website. Unlike a lot of driver coaches, he's relaxed, chatty and not at all bossy. He really knows his stuff and is a very capable coach.

For road training for a performance car, HPC. Waremark, who posted above, can advise.

Note that the above two routes are very different, so it would be good to establish which is of interest before committing. There have been some crossovers - I believe Mark Hales used to do a course with John Lyons that covered both bases, but that was a long time ago.

Has any one any experience of these people? They advertised in the Porsche Post (magazine of Porsche Club GB)

They have a free e-book which I thought was pretty good. They get some good reviews and the two day course sounds very interesting.

This could be excactly what the OP was looking for?

It was a few years ago, but I've had a day w/ Ivan and he's really rather good - so much so that i booked my wife in for another day of fast road driving with him also. I can highly recommend.

These guys are much more expensive than the HPC Course Managers, let alone Reg. I wouldn't recommend paying their prices.

CAT driver training at Millbrook Provnig Ground. One of the most valuable days I have had in a car.
