The High Performance Course will be running another Young Drivers' Day on the Saturday 29 July 2017. The event is open to full licence holders who are aged 26 years or less, and who are not already graduates of the High Performance Course.

The aims of the day are to:

  • Promote awareness of driving skills at advanced levels
  • Encourage the participants to develop their own skills
  • Have fun
More details are available on the High Performance Course website.

It's been running for many years so you can also find information in previous threads, or ask a question here and someone will be able to help. To pre-empt one question that always gets asked: If you've just outside the age criteria (i.e. late twenties) it may still be worth applying.

I'm 29 when the date is and the organiser just said apply and will be fine.

Just for people who have already been. The website is slightly confusing mentioning its £33 for the day, but on other pages says it's 2 1/2 days all in.
So is it £33 and 2 1/2 days all in? Just i dont live local so will have to stay in a hotel for the duration.

The Young Drivers' Day is a single day in Oxfordshire, and the £33 goes towards the cost of room hire and catering. The aim of the day is to encourage younger drivers to explore just how far it's possible to develop on-road driving skills.

If what you see on the day inspires you to work on your driving further, you may end up wanting to complete the full High Performance Course. This typically involves two and a half days of coaching, and unfortunately costs more than £33. wink

Out on the road, you will have two sessions sitting alongside one of the Course Managers or a graduate of the High Performance Course. First, they will drive you in their car to give a demonstration of the high standard of HPC driving, and encourage a discussion about aspects of driving as they emerge. Afterwards, you will drive in your own car on a similar route, and whilst not offering tuition your co-driver will offer feedback and advice after the drive. The goal is to raise your awareness of driving techniques and hopefully inspire you to take your driving development further.
As mentioned on the website, the Young Drivers Day is just 1 day (~9 to 5?) and has a couple of sessions with more than likely a course graduate volunteering their time to show you what advanced road driving is all about and offering some feedback on your driving. Obviously with there being only two HPC coaches, it's not going to be possible for every one of the ~20-30 "young drivers" to drive with them, but the graduates who you will drive with are all passionate about driving and some are even coaches in their own right (Porsche driving consultants etc.). The idea of the YDD is to "inspire you to take your driving development further" either through other organisations such as the IAM/RoSPA or even the full High Performance Course.

Apart from the single YDD page linked to above, the rest of website is talking about is full High Performance Course - the ~2.5 days 1:1 with one of the two professional coaches.

Just to raise awareness of this again...
Still space on the day - fantastic day with lots of good drivers & interesting cars - I will probably take my M5 along...

do sign up if you are in or close to the age and come and get an intro to some high end driving skills

Three weeks to go, and time for a thread bump.

There are still places available, so if you're aged up to 26-ish and want to know more about how to realise your potential as a driver, it's time to act.

This is looking like a tough thing to sell at the moment.

Maybe it should be open to 77 year olds... tongue out

Currently discussing this with a colleague who's likely attending this, just picked up a proper car (Exige) and always wanting to learn a little more, I am a year too old (27) though, is that a problem?

That's almost 26 - I'd say your chances are good. Best thing to do is to email the organiser via the course website (link is in the first post) and ask.

I'm sure Exiges are very nice and all, but it would have been fun to compare our 540is - has yours gone yet?

They do seem hard to value at the moment - not to worry though, you'll enjoy the day whatever you bring.

Sure I will smile

Told the GF and now she wants in....another for the register but she's slightly older than I am, really robbing the cradle there! She's not had any proper tuition (beyond a passenger ride with Reg Local and myself) and if it could stop her trying to ride the boot of the car she's following I'd be happy!

ETA - we're both now accepted and fully paid up, see all on the day smile

Have to say, we had a brilliant day with a good bunch of guys (and girls).

Thanks to all, let's hope I can scrape enough pennies together to do the course this year else I'll have to see if I can have the age range extended by another year next time!

the course is not cheap as an absolute figure, but when you think of it as 2.5 days of some of the top tuition you can get in driving, then it isn't such bad value... ultimately I guess it is each person's priority, for me, I would perhaps prefer to go without a holiday and do something like this instead... but then perhaps my desire to improve my driving is stronger than it would be for someone else, we are all different smile
