Well that's my first Advanced Driving lesson over! I passed IAM nearly 15yrs ago, did my bit being an observer (instructor) for three years and did a stint on the committee. I've got a bit (lot) rusty though so New Year resolution to do the course again. No dramas and the instructor didn't scream... out loud anyway!

Brave man.

I did my first one 35 years ago. Scared to know all my current faults!

For an idea of what it's about, you could do a lot worse than checking out Reg's YouTube Thread on this forum.

Observation, attitude and a systematic approach would be the basics though.

Pim, Yep I watched Reg's videos to remind me and once ive done the course i'll be over to see Reg!

When I took people out as a trainer/observer you could see the transformation in peoples driving. The session where it was most marked was country driving - about 2/3rds of the way into the course. I'd ask the student/associate to show me their driving. Mostly frantic, tense, unbalanced, lack of observation, limit points to cock, unnecessary risk taking and the like. One or two sessions and it was remarkable. Mostly quicker with much less risk and drama, bigger reserves of safety and demonstrably more relaxed.

Try it - you'll be surprised.

well, IAM course completed, signed up for observer training and enjoying driving and the cars again. Once observer training is completed there's the tough climb to what they call 'Masters'. Once my diary commitments stabilise a visit to Reg is on the cards too.

Having fun with driving although the bloody 20mph zones round here are a PITA and sticking to 20 is making me feel the pressure and wrath of others who consequently take risks. One local village has a cricket green and 20mph around both sides of it. If I stick to 20 one or more of the following cars will inevitably take the other route round the green in a race to get to the nsl first (and do 40...). How can it be safer?

Because 20 zones are unnecessary and serve only to irritate. I would overtake you or take the other route too.
Even worse on a motorcycle, trying to do thirty is bad enough, but 20 is hard work. There should be a good reason for 20, and the local council isn't it.

If you're not trolling then you're exactly the type of idiot who would benefit from compulsory driver re-training. Whilst you're racing me around the Green you'll be driving past a Church,a School,a pub, houses, pedestrians, horse riders, the occasional cricket match & other cars.
This is the Advanced Driving thread,The Council thread is thataway...................

I'm not sure that compulsory driver re-training is necessarily the answer, and nor is it helpful to call somebody an idiot.

Maybe you too could do with a bit of re-training, not least in how to conduct yourself in civilised company.

There are quite widely varying views here on some of these matters, quite strongly held views too, in some cases; but for the most part they are being discussed with a good deal of respect for the differing viewpoints.

Please, don't spoil that. Thank you.

I wouldn't be racing you around the green, particularly if you are doing 20mph, what I would be doing is close to the 30mph limit that should be active and was so before that dumb 20 was applied. And no doubt operated for decades without issue.
20 mph limits don't deserve any respect.

That's such a difficult call. I have that feeling about the imposition of 50s for, what seems like, no good reason.

Truly divided on that. If it were through the village I was living in, etc etc. Lowest common denominator etc etc. The Law is the Law etc etc.

Overall, as rational human beings it is possible to think from someone else's POV and - while I hate this "nannying" - it's usually with preservation of life in mind, so I tend to want to respect my fellow HBs however misguided I think they might be. I think most people, even if grudgingly, end up on that thought - or am I wrong and hopelessly misguided? hehe

No, you're not hopelessly misguided; there is much in what you say. However, it's a beautiful morning here and I have major work to do in the garden, and at the moment that has a stronger pull than this place. It also means I'll not be out terrorising my fellow road users in North Yorkshire for a while. I'll see you later. tongue out

Look the speed limits are put there for a reason by very clever people they suit all traffic conditions day and night
look at the limit and your speedo and you will be a good safe driver ....

Good grief; after all these years that's got to be the key factor I've been overlooking all along. My quest to be a good safe driver is in sight at last.

Thank you, I shall be forever in your debt. bow

Er, is that the guy that supposedly designed Scarborough's traffic management system, a system that incorporates lots of traffic lights creating much more congestion and delay than we might otherwise have? I'd heard previously that he was a cyclist and that he didn't drive.

This is a downside of thoughtlessly lower limits: many people can lose respect for speed limits.
