Advanced driving and ....er the elderly

As an IAM member of many years but who doesnt tell anyone, at the age of 73 years and a Morgan user, I decided on an 'elderlies update' to see what I d forgotten.
I arranged with an ADI and Advanced driver too, to assess me. That was rather chastening! I was assessed as still very competent BUT wasn t aware of numerous but important road safety issues that were either law or that I d forgotten the importance of. Too much info to go into here, but worth making the effort to take the assessment and possibly help in insurance issues.

As an IAM observer I have done quite a few of those FREE assessments be the driver an IAM member or not

Only on one occasion did I recommend further training

Good on you. The trouble is a bit like preaching to the choir its hard getting to the ones who most need it.

For the OP. Why don't you do the ROSPA test....in your morgan would be a treat for the examiner!

As an ADI and also a fleet trainer i have done countless "assessments" of full licence holders and even the ones "made" to endure some twit assessing their driving if they have half a brain will admit to having learned something they can implement into their own driving

Think IAM realise there is an issue with people who passed their test years ago and have not had a re-assessment. Everyone will get rusty. I have IAM and ROSPA on a bike, not a car. I ride for a Blood bike group, where advanced training is a requirement, as is a 3 yearly check ride. Obviously if ROSPA your re-test is good enough. But when this rule came in, it was amazing to listen to the IAM riders, who were not keen on a check ride. Personally as stated, I am always up for check rides etc as you forget and get bad habits

I totally agree, having a test every 3 years really makes folk keep their skills up.

IAM have introduced a Fellowship which is a regular test every 3 years to meet the needs of the blood drivers and riders.

Problem with the fellowship (as I understand it) is if you happen to fail, you are out of the IAM. Who in their right mind would go through a do or die test, when they can keep their membership by dong nothing. At least the ROSPA has a 3 grade test, so if not as sharp you could get a Silver rather than a Gold, but still be a member. The individual Blood bike assessment for IAM members does not impact your IAM memebership.
