Ok, opinions on this one

In heavyish traffic in Lancaster two lane one way system, I often join the two lane section from the right, but want to reach the left hand lane. Now normally the left hand lane is crawling at this point while the right is moving.
So do I ?
1 sit in the joining road, indicating waiting for a space to open in the left hand lane
2 join the right lane then stop and immediately indicate left and wait for an opening in the left lane
3 drive down the left lane while indicating hoping some lets me into the left lane before my turn off.
All three have problems
1 I sit and block a car behind me who often wants to go in the right lane
2 I sit and block everyone in the right lane
3 I really annoy people in the left lane by passing them and (as they see it) cut in at the last minute
When the traffic is flowing, it's fine, join the right lane then filter to the left but in stationary traffic, someone always seems to be liable to annoyance.

I would chose 2- essentially cross both lanes at the same point. All choices hold some people up/annoy someone, but this choice means that those behind you can see what you are doing and that it is actually the car(s) in the left lane refusing to let you merge that is holding them up, and not you.So do I ?

Someone will no doubt shortly come along with a better idea!
