Since i passed my driving test after 1997 it means i need to sit an additional test to tow a trailer over 750KG. To do this i have a trailer and automatic jeep.

What i'm wondering is despite holing a full licence for manual, will i be restricted to towing with an auto only since that is what i'll be sitting the test in? I'm only using auto as this is all i have available with a towball.

No. You've already proved you know what a clutch pedal is, so you're not being tested on that - just on whether you can tow.

I beg to differ my friend at work did exactly as you are suggesting took the test in an automatic Jeep, thinking that as he held a full manual licence, he would have a full manual entitlement when towing.

Unfortunately on passing the test and getting his licence back he has a numerical marker next to his b+e entitlement meaning he can know tow only with a automatic vehicle.

Think you might have to source a manual vehicle to do the test if you wish to keep the manual entitlement.

But if you'd done your car licence in a manual, then later did a C & CE test in autos you'd have got manual C & CE licences (but not with BE, C1 or D1 etc)..............barking I know.

If you pass your trailer test in an auto, you'll be restricted to only towing with an auto. If you're planning to use your own vehicle, make sure your read the requirements for the load, car and trailer very carefully. Most private runners don't even get out of the test centre due to the vehicle being unsuitable for test.

Ideally take a few hours training with a local specialist and use their kit for the test. The test is quite comprehensive.
