Junction near miss.

Waiting to turn left out of a side turning with a long stream of traffic approaching from my right. The next car coming, a black Passat, is giving a left turn signal, promising. The one behind it is as well, even better. Wait to see what the Passat does and sure enough it slows down. Into gear, clutch to biting point, ready to go, the Passat starts to turn and a split second later turns back and goes straight on.
The nearside front wheel had just hit the nearside white line when the driver changed his mind. Fortunately it all happened so quickly I hadn't started to move.
Apart from being a cautionary tale, where would I stand if I had pulled out and a collision resulted? Without video footage I'd be reduced to saying 'but he gave a signal!' presumably leaving a big chunk of responsibility in my lap.

Unless you've got a dashcam which faces right you're unlikely to have video footage. Might be worth noting the reg number if you're unlucky enough to have it happen in future, I'd suspect a crash-for-cash scenario or a *completely* inept driver.
If the worst had come to the worst, then perhaps the driver behind would corroborate your version of events.
