I wondered if anyone else here had noticed how polite drivers are in South Africa - in particular the way they keep over to the left to facilitate overtaking - rather then obstructing you like people do in the UK!
There are reasons for that. Mainly the risk of someone shooting you in the face if they take offence to your driving. I had the pleasure of driving around Capetown and South Africa in a Mini Cooper. They are very polite and do keep left but driving on the motorway at night was scary as so many beaten up pick ups don't seem to have working lights. Some of the mountain roads are amazing and smooth with magnificent views[

I loved driving around Cape Town, partly because I hired an AC Cobra kit and drove round the wine routes, but also because of how friendly everyone was.
A couple of times we stopped at junctions with guys milling about in the middle of the road, a little intimidating at first with no roof or door locks, but all they said was 'nice car' and 'it's like James Bond'. The latter comment not strictly accurate, but i wasn't going to argue!
