How difficult is this? Some people say it's basically an extended DSA test with fewer minor faults permitted. Others that it's tougher than ROSPA Gold, which would make more sense.

Advanced driving and DSA driving are two different kettles of fish

Our IAM group deters those doing their ADI part 2 from doing the advanced until they have passed part 2 - that is under heavy advice from the many grade 6 ADIs we have as observers

The DSA part 2 requires the driver to get many less faults than a learner but it is generally done under the same remit which makes sense as they will often be required to demo to learners as to what the DSA want to see on test

They aren't going to worry about things ROSPA want, & it is basically a DSA test with fewer faults allowed (maximum of 6).

Fail it 3 times & you'll have to take part 1 again (& wait at least 2 years from your prior part 1 pass)

I took the ADI test some 10 years ago. It is not hard if you drive properly!!! simplestongue out

Seriously though the test lasts about an hour, and if you live near a motorway you might do a junction (I did junc 3 M27 to Junction 5. You have to do all the manoeuvres ( T-I-R, left reverse, bay park, reverse park on the road) as I recall you could only do max of 5 minor faults...the 6th failed you...I mangaed 2 faults, and didn't agree with him over them, but kept my mouth shut cause it don't help if you upset the DSA!

I then a couple of weeks later took my IAM test having just booked it my self wthout any "observed drives" as I considered that if I could pass the ADI test then the IAM should be easy enough.....and it was. I only joined the IAM and took their test as I didn't want parents saying that they were IAM drivers and therefore better than me as most people don't realise ADI's do an advanced test to qualify to teach.

The difference was that the advanced test encourages you to drive within the limits...but in a hurry, where as the ADI test is a pass/fail driving test, and if you fail could potentially cost you a shed load of money to put right what went wrong, and prevent you becoming an ADI....Failing an IAM test just means....well you failed, so do some more training and take it again. For me the IAM test has done nothing except provide me with a mag every 1/4 , and judging by some of the letters in it makes me wonder why I bother reading it. This forum is far more interesting to read and learn from than the IAM one!

I am going to try and take the ROSPA test when I get the time to do it, but only because I want to learn more from a different perspective of driving and see if I can pass on what i like to my pups that will help them post driving test. I should imagine that the ADI test, the IAM test and rospa are all simular in that you should be able to drive safely from A to B?

I would imagine that anyone who has recently passed a rospa/IAM test should be able to pass the ADI test provided they can do all 4 manoeuvres safely, and accurate.......the way the dsa want you to do them!

Didn't you have to do the right reverse?

Did my part two in Slough; that in itself made it much tougher than RoSPA or IAM hehe

Blimey, I can't remember if i did or not, but i know i don't spend too much time on it for the teaching of pups seeing that they will not get tested on it for the driving test, and the principles are very simular to the right reverse bay park

Driving in Slough must be a laugh, glad i don't have to take pups around there....or the "magic roundabout" in Swindon!

I vaguely remember on an ADI forum someone saying their learner had to do a right reverse on test; seemed a bit odd. It is required on pt2 though. I do a fair bit of training with van & lorry drivers so the right reverse is quite useful for them. As for Slough (or learners for that matter); ancient history for me.
