Broken down in L3 WWYD?
Discussion
On the M40 yesterday afternoon, the 50 mph warning signs were on for ages. Eventually we came across a transit min-bus thing parked in L3. It was a very clear day with pretty light traffic. Ignoring the mystery of why it stopped there, what would you do if it was you? Stay in the car, get out, go where...? It wasn't full of pax fortunately. Just driver and front seat pax by the look of it.
Also apart from calling it in (which someone had already done), would you have tried to help in any way?

After stting myself, obviously hazards on get myself and any passengers in the centre and behind barriers, phone 999 and try and warn others from behind the barrier.
Like to see you try that with the new concrete barriers that are being installed every where now! Edited by civicduty on Sunday 21st April 19:17
Yes I wasn't thinking of stopping to help.
I think the barriers in the centre are just single, so not one to get behind. They double up around the warning signs (IYSWIM). Where would you stand in relation to the broken down car. More towards the traffic or past it (in relation to the traffic)?

Can we not crawl to a halt in the hard shoulder?
Thats what you should try and do in the event of a breakdown in L2/L3, but its not always easy to do. People might not let you in, or what if the breakdown was a gearbox going pop which locks up the drivetrain? Good luck coasting with that!SonicShadow said:

I dont care if people let me in. If it saves me being stuck in a live lane of traffic i will make my way back across.I've been stuck in L4 of the M25 at rush hour
It was a freak accident: the bolts holding the engine in place all sheared simultaneously Consequently, the engine fell out of the car without warning. The car stopped in an instant. Thankfully, the car behind had been keeping to the 2-second rule, so was able to stop without hitting me. I was very luck, considering there would have been no brake lights to warn the car behind of my sudden stop.
Obviously, I was unable to move the car. I and my passenger got out of the car and used the central reservation as a shield, where we waited for the police and the AA after phoning them.
It was quite scary. Though I have the honour of closing all four lanes of the M25 at rush hour It was quite a sight.

Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard a reason for actually being stuck in a live lane.It was a freak accident: the bolts holding the engine in place all sheared simultaneously Consequently, the engine fell out of the car without warning. I have once been stuck in L4 of a motorway. There had been an accident further up, and I was caught up in the ensuing tailbacks across all lanes.
Cambelt tensioner decided it had had enough (It was about a week old!), as I was barely moving at the time, I couldn't do a lot.
Because the other lanes were stationery, I was able to get out and organise other drivers to leave a gap infront of them so it could eventually be pushed over to the hard shoulder!

Please don't stop. Call it in. Trust that we'll get there with flashing lights and sort it out. Even with the car lights, high viz etc it is still a dangerous place to be. With none of that it's worse.
Hypothetical question:If you're on your own and your phone isn't connected to the car, should you stop on the hard shoulder to call the police? Or is it considered acceptable to use your phone while driving if you're calling to report an emergency?

What speed were you doing? An instant stop at 70mph would cause serious injury? It was a freak accident: the bolts holding the engine in place all sheared simultaneously Consequently, the engine fell out of the car without warning.
