For the first time ever in my driving career today I encountered conditions where I was literally using the horn as a fog horn, at speeds of about 1mph. Could not see even five yards. Quite scary actually.

Anyone ever done this before or was it a bit too... novel...?

The Highway Code said:
The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence.
Your use was bang on. Might have annoyed some people but it's better than a crash.

Done it a couple of times on the Bathgate hills - window open as you can hear for substantially further than you can see hehe

Yep, A1M many years ago. Pea soup. Couldn't see past end of bonet, pulled over and had a kip until light, cos seriously it was bad and very unfunny.

Had a similar experience on the south downs, coming up to Ditchling Beacon after picking up a mate from the pub in Brighton. It's a fog trap at the best of times but this particular night I could just see the verge and no more, however we came up with an alternative to using the horn.

Opening the sunroof we cranked up the music and I left my less than sober friend to flash the hazzards and fogs in time to the music, which probably isn't an IAM advised method but no one crashed in to us which is proof that this experimental technique does work (the fact that we never actually met anyone on the road is a mere statistical error in the experiment wink).
