Was on the A419 dual carriageway doing a decent speed in the fast lane when I get a Vectra right up my arse so I slowed down a bit until he went back and then I sped up to a decent speed again where again he started tailgating me again waving me to move over, (usually I move out the way but he was seriously close and he didn't look like he was in an urgent situation at all and there were a few cars in front of me so I didn't have a huge gap in front of me either, also I'm not going to be bullied into the busy slow lane when I'm keeping up with traffic in the fast lane) he even moved out to the right like he was going to overtake on the small gap between the barrier and the fast lane!
When I turned off he had his arms up sort of questioning what the hell I was doing and why I didn't move, I really don't think he understood what he was doing.

Also after that I had a C-Class again with a older man right up my arse going round a roundabout, again I have an Ignis which is basically a roundabout hugger so I wasn't holding him up, all it took was me and my mate to look in the mirror and he backed off.

This isn't a rant about old people but I think some of them see a small car with young people in and they instantly think they know better.

Not really a big deal but thought I'd post it, Probably get loads of abuse for this but just want to see what you lot think smile

So someone who was older than you wanted to go faster than you and you thought "fk'em"?

Sounds like you were being held up by traffic in L2 but gradually passing some slower traffic, if I've understood correctly.

It's not much fun with a tailgater up your chuff, and it didn't sound like there was more progress to be made. One strategy is to pull over and let him past and then use his aggression as a battering ram. He knocks the other drivers out of the way, and you waft through behind. You'll also have a great view of the accident when he gets caught out so leave a bit of room.

would "fast lane" be part of the problem?

Pretty much yeah, There was a car not far in front of me and I'm not going to tailgate him to move him so Vectra man behind me is happy and I'm not going to move to the slow lane and do 50 just to please him either.

Part of becoming a better driver is about managing your mood and reaction when bad things happen.

Doing something which is better rather than which is an aggressive and/or emotionally driven reaction to the road situation is likely to be a longer term recipe for success.

Pull in, slow down for a few seconds, let them past. What's the big deal?

Also there's no such thing as "slow" and "fast" lanes.

Correct.

Also slowing down in the 3rd lane when you are already holding people up is really bad thing to do. GET OUT OF THE WAY or speed up.

Is that a look you practice? Sounds like a sort of Travis Bickle doing a Blue Steel with his mate type thing.

Get out of the way.

Benefits nobody to have him behind you.

Either you're an arse for not using proper lane discipline and contributing to the tailback or he's an arse for tailgating. BertBert is right...

Semi-related to older gentlemen...

I do find that men of a certain age definitely do think they are better/know better, for no other reason than they are a) older and b) have been doing it longer. There is a definite spate of "well I can't possibly be wrong/he can't possibly be right... I'm older!".

I put it down to arrogance.

As for tailgating, I find it's either the crusties or the chavs that tailgate me on the twistys. They are sticking with me, almost urging me to go faster when I am pelting along the lanes. The second they get past me (because I slow up, move over slightly on larger sections) I end up following them at about half the speed we were previously going at.

Reason for this is driver ability: when they were tailgating me, I was the driver doing *ALL* the work, reading the road, positioning, etc. They merely followed and played copy-cat. Nothing strictly "wrong" up to now, however they a) have no clue as to the *why* and just copy verbatim so therefore not learning anything, and b) believe the best way to "stay with me" is to cement themselves to my bumper.

Driving in such a fashion, it's easy to "stay with" most drivers/cars on the twisties. However it's bloody un-safe. Naturally they think they are the st for "sticking with" a much faster car etc.

Perhaps that's the reason why some crusties tailgate?

On a semi-related note, I once "caused" the car behind to drive off the road. He was a chav (not really important, but he was) and he was tailgating. I looked at him in the RVM, looked ahead and "fk, TRACTOR" emerging from a side entrance. I had to anchor up. The guy behind took evasive and drove off the road, through the hedge and into the field the tractor just came from. I freely admit I share some blame in this, even if only from a moral stand point. Hindsight dictates that I should have anticipated the tractor emerging *suddenly* (high hedge/treeline, tractor was all but invisible until he emerged onto the carriageway) and made allowances, especially considering the chav trying to mate with my rear bumper.

That being said, it was his obligation to be able to stop in the distance he can see to be clear, not delegate that responsibility to the driver in front. I believe legally he'd be the one who would be screwed by insurance/police for driving too close/without care and attention etc and for hitting the car in front.

I like to drive quick as much as the next man.
But if im in the outside lane of a multi laned single carriage way, a dual carriage way or a motorway and someone behind seems to want to go quicker than me i get out their way as soon as i can. Even if that means dropping 10 mph and slotting into a smaller space.
One thing that does piss me off is morons like you that sit in the outside lane for minutes and minutes because occasionally you pass a slower moving car on the inside lane.
Show a bit of courtesy and you will find driving many times more relaxing and many times more enjoyable.
To the extend that the only thing that causes me the slightest bit of stress on the road now-a-days is not knowing where i am meant to be going.

No need to move over, like the PH-kneejerk brigade are telling you to do, if the quoted bit is the case.

How does it help to OP to annoy the driver behind?

I get the very distinct impression the car "infront" of the OP was a fair distance away from him.

I didn't suggest that the OP deliberately annoy anyone. Saying that, if it helps the OP make progress and he's doing nothing wrong, that seems like a fair deal.

Read the OP again.

It looks to me that the Vectra driver was annoyed that the OP didn't move over.

Staying "in his way" (as the "old person" will see it) doesn't help anyone.

If someone behind you is flashing their lights, tailgating, looking like they want past, why not just let them pass? If it is busy traffic then at least you get to have a chuckle at their pointless burning of fuel.
