Been thinking about a driving course that will help me learn and exploit the limits of the car in a safe environment. Done Carlimits but want something less wearing on the car (thinking a wet skidpan). Anyone have any experience of The "Performance Car Control Course" at Driver Development programme? See: www.driverdp.com.

I have recently bought an Elise if that makes any difference - thanks.

I am sceptical about whether you will really find low grip stuff useful by comparison with CarLimits. What you need to know is how to control the car at normal speeds on a normal surface. I was surprised how little damage a session with Andy Walsh did to the tyres, after blowing them up to 50 psi as he recommended.

No personal experience of these people.

I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for but, if you are interested in developing your road driving skills to get the most out of your performance vehicle, I don't think you'll do much better than spending a day with John Cave.

I have spent two full days on the roads around the Cotswolds with John (I think in 2005 and 2007 or thereabouts). Both days were excellent and I was boring anybody who would listen for months afterwards. John is a great teacher and a really nice bloke who took my driving to another level and inspired me to do more. When I did my first day with him I had been driving for 25 years and was wondering, before I met him, if I had wasted my money. After a demo drive from John I realised that, despite him having already described me as a competent driver, I was actually rubbish by comparison!

If you like driving I'd be surprised if you didn't find a day with John extremely rewarding and great fun.

One word of caution... If and when you do book you might just want to check that John is happy to go out in your car. I'm sure the Elise is a great car but it might be a bit of a squeeze for Mr Cave.

Do report back if you do it.

Good luck

Tony
