I've always advised treating all other drivers as potential careless, inattentive idiots.
It worked again yesterday.
I'm just lined up to pass a big Artic. on a 2 lane section. I glimpse a silver Euro-box on a slip road. Somehow I calculate her speed is matching the truck's so I back off.
Sure enough, she swings on without adjusting her speed and the truck driver has to brake and swerve out half into my lane.

Looking back, that's the fourth time in as many years I've had to avoid a possible accident due to inconsiderate merging.

Great example of anticipation.

At slip roads I expect all the traffic to shunt across lanes when some inconsiderate fool tries to force their way on. so I try to avoid being in lane 3 where the slip road ends, just in case.

Only the 4th? smile I see that happening all the time.
It does get worse, 2 lane slip road, both lanes full of tailgaiting cars trying to 'merge' onto a 2 lane DC. Vehicles on the main carrage way do pretty well at moving to lane 2, but that still leaves 2 lanes of traffic trying to merge with each other and lane 1. A329(M) junction with M4.

Too many drivers assume they will be let onto the main carriageway at the end of the slip road and don't even look for a gap trusting it will appear.

I commute home on the M6 leaving at junction 11 which has it's exit slip pretty much immediately after the entry slip from the services. I see quite a few drivers who assume my car or the car in front will magically vanish to let them out, the issue is that if I move over to let them out then I will struggle to get back into lane one for my exit.

Typical of the piss poor standard of driving!!! there should be a campain on this, TV ad and or police stopping the offenders and saying the lines on the slip road mean "give way" what part of give way dont you understand you muppet!!! Oh and people giving way to these people by swerving into lane two are nearly as bad and maybe even more dangerous and sending out the wrong message that its ok just to wander out from the slip road everything is normal thats how it works!!!!!
hopefully it will be a low loader that they hit and not a family in a car with there selfish ignorance of safe driving they deserve a crash....

agreed.
i get a good view from up in my wagon, and never ceases to amaze me how many people drive virtually all the way to the end of the slip roads, and then just expect to barge their way in. i keep a very watchfull eye, and most don't even check any of their mirrors, or glance over their shoulder whilst driving up said sliproads. to busy sipping coffee, doing make-up, or just day dreaming.
i used to move out, but got fed up of constantly being stitched up, by the idiots joining from the sliproad and then sitting at bang on 55m.p.h leaving me stranded, and possibly holding up traffic behind me. now i just stay where i am, the traffic joining is supposed to give way and lets face it a car is alot easier to drop, or gain speed than a 40 tonne truck.

Yes, the M4-A329(M) south junction is one of the shortest i have ever seen, with the loonies just drifting into L1 causing mayhem with the sheep on the A329(M)who just move into L2 as they think they have to give Way! There is enough space to make this bit of road 3 lane down to the Coppid Beech turn off.
Mind you when you are in a limited Minibus in L2 and a L1 decides to move over, the looks of panic on both his face and the t**t on the slip are a joy to behold.
I was taught that before you change lane/direction, to ask 'would it make anyone behind change their direction course or speed?'. if any of these is Yes, then keep your position. Happens quite a lot near slip roads!!!!
