Merging Into Traffic Across 2 lanes
Discussion
Hi Guy's looking for some advise on this.
the end of my road joins a duel carriage way just before a roundabout. (see pic I start at the blue arrow) Now each morning its nose to tail traffic. I signal right and get let out by a car in lane 1. now this is where I think I am going wrong. I pull forward across lane 1 and keep my signal right and wait for some one to let me into lane 2. now if I pull into lane one properly and wait to get into lane one I never get let out. before the roundabout where I am doubling back on myself. Its around 10 to 15 meters to the roundabout from the junction.
Any advise would be great, thanks

it's the bikes/mopeds that give me a fright they don't appear to slow down for the roundabout they just fly through the stationary traffic on the roundabout. bus let me out this morning so I couldn't see round it, luckily I was in the van so I get a much better vantage point. if I am in the golf I have to take my harnesses of as I cant lean forward enough to see around, even then I am to low. hopefully any BIB would turn a blind eye to this.

I know that junction well (used to work occasionally in the office on the left)
It's an ar£e of a junction - often the only way to get out is to force your way out by picking on a driver that looks like they may be easily intimidated. I only ever turned left there - it must be doubly difficult to get across to lane 2
I believe you're doing it right - merging into lane 1 might mean you may be tempted to try to go round the roundabout from lane 1, which is asking for trouble. Far better to hold up some traffic and get into lane 2 before the roundabout

thats good to know, the brute force while grimacing approach works well in my van. but in the P&J with 4 points on, a bucket seat almost on the floor. its much more difficult. Ideally go for L2 - but there are two lanes onto the roundabout, two lanes on it, and two lanes off; so you could expect to do that with clear indication and looking over your shoulder IMO.
that wouldn't work in real terms as 90% of the traffic in the outside lane of the DC is going strait on. imagine the round about doesn't exist as that's what 90% of the traffic is doing. VR
Just be assertive and make the decision, that's what is wrong with most of driving, too much dithering. If you get let into first lane then 2nd lane will yield as they see they are holding the whole show up!
Far too much buggering about these days, if second lane doesn't yield set off and be prepared to brake, when they see your nose arrive 9 out of 10 will let you go. If you are ready on the brakes then it works every time.
I drive a big blue van and have a rural village to get out of on a morning. No one will let you out, I kid you not, they look the other way, pretend they ain't seen you. Mind you they always seem to hit the brakes when I ignore them and drive out!!!

Couldnt agree more, this is how I am doing it at the moment. the post was more to clarify that Im not contravening the highway code, and to see if anyone else had a better solution. its the 2 wheeled road users that cause me problems because the angles are such that I cant see them and they cant see me. the post was partly brought about as my boss pulled through stationary traffic off his drive to turn right as a motor cycle overtook the traffic queuing for the lights. you can imagine the carnage.
