Sure you're all familiar with the vast amount of dashcam videos coming from Russia.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedd...

I'm not a bus driver, but I was just looking for some other opinions on the 'accidents' (insurance fraud is common there, hence dashcams everywhere) that occurred in the video. On first viewing I can only see one incident (the last one) which was definitely the bus driver being a berk, and the rest all seemed to be fairly inevitable (even the one with the pedestrian on the crossing, though I feel he could have braked sooner.)

What are your thoughts on this, Phers?

Edit: rewatched: the one that happens about 45 seconds into the video was also pretty avoidable, but who is at fault mainly? The driver of the car or the bus?

The last one is a prime example of why you should NOT undertake.

If I ever find myself in Russia, I think I'll be giving the buses a wide berth biggrin

These are brilliant! It's just like your driving hazard perception test, but with actual crashes!

Crash #1: Road raging bus driver. Bus driver just drives into him, BMW was being extremely aggressive, Bus made no attempt to avoid collision.
Crash #2: Woman Lada driver nervous bad driver, Bus made no attempt to avoid collision.
Crash #3: Definately a crap car driver. Bus crash Unavoidable
Crash #4: Bad driving by old man, Bus made no attempt to avoid collision.
Crash #5: Road Rage, Bus speeding, silver Nissan speeding, Nissan could brake, Bus couldn't.
Crash #6: Bus and car both going for same lane. Bus made no attempt to avoid collision.

I would say the bus drivers will very happily crash into you like playing bumper cars. Bit like over here really, funny when its not your vehicle or insurance

I think you may be overestimating the ability of buses to stop quickly, much as those drivers who cut up the buses and then braked sharply in front of them did.

No video of driving in Russia has ever tempted me to try it myself, the roads seem to be populated by the drunk/inattentive/dangerous.

Bonus question: How many yellow Transits were there?

Strange, in the eight years or so I drove PCVs I never realy thought of the insurance or who owned the vehicle. Forty odd people behind me, often little kids was enough motivation to focus my attention on what was going on around me.

Must admit though; if push came to shove, given the amount of car drivers that felt it fine to pull out infront, I'd have hit them to cushion the blow rather than brake hard enough to cause injury to my passengers. BTW, brakes on busses and coaches are very sharp, you can stop them pretty dramaticaly but it would make an awful mess of little skulls against seat backs!

Can't see where words like 'happily' and 'funny' fit in though. Guess we just don't find the same things amusing

About half of these crashes were avoidable if the Bus drivers had shown any awareness or forward planning. The one at 3:40 is a classic. The Bus driver should have slowed down as soon as he saw the brake lights on the vehicle he eventually hit. It was obvious the driver of the car was going to do something stupid but the Bus driver just ploughed on regardless. Glad I don't have to drive in Russia though.

Given that the bus drivers had longer to assess what was going on than we see in each clip and also a wider field of vision than offered by the camera I suspect most were avoidable. But isn't that the case with most crashes generally?

It struck me that the lack of lane markings doesn't exactly discourage some of the erratic driving seen there. No excuse for the accidents, but many of the vehicles just drifted about without any real consideration of what was around them. Much of the time I was watching, thinking "is this supposed to be 2 lanes wide or 3"?

Having been there (quite an experience. It looks a bit like Western Europe, but isn't quite the same), some of the driving in Russia is 'interesting', although less crazy than Asian and South American countries I have driven in.

They're not Transits, they're GAZ Gazelle -a sort of Transit 'tribute'.

Sorry, watched it a few times, and no where can I see any dead bodies being prepared for burial hehe What I did see where two people going for the same space both assuming the other was going to give way.

I am convinced it was several accidents by the same driver, just had to be :-)

BTW a couple of cars chopping in front and then standing on the brakes was a bit optimistic but the crossing with the girl on would probably have got run over by the bus had the car not blocked the path.

Plus of course they drive on the other side so the car that got hit was going the correct side, the bus moved out into him?

Having been in a few buses in Russia in my younger days the video doesn't surprise me!

Once aquaplaned towards a junction at at least 50mph - while I was sitting in the rear-centre seat looking straight down the bus... as the front end broke traction and stopped going the same way as we were travelling!

That's why I never sit at the rear in the middle of the bus. I can just see myself flying from one end to the other if the bus got into a significant crash. Or worse - flying a fair way but not dead straight, and nutting one of the verticle handhole poles on my way along the bus. That'd hurt...
