regaining a reasonable gap
Discussion
Apologies - this has almost certainly been asked before, but -
after a reasonably unpleasant experience of being 'left hooked' (i.e. overtaken, overtaker then immediately slams on brakes to turn left), I was reminded of something that's always vaguely bothered me - normally, you are expected to leave a safe gap from the person in front, so if you hit the back of them it's your fault, but it seems unfair to apply that to a situation where someone's just overtaken you, joined your lane, pulled out etc - so, how quickly are you expected to rebuild a sensible gap after someone removes it? I've never seen any real guidance on this.
Cheers

As quickly as is safely possible without excessive inconvenience to other road users is the only answer I can give
If you ever get one who dives in front then immediately slams on causing you to rear end it quickly get the reg of a witness or be prepeared to pay up (unless cctv can help)
As with all things on the road there is likely to be a clue that this might happen so look out for the signs
